Never off topic. Completely related, as we were discussing signal levels.

I'd say this was the answer if I was betting.
'The STB's are designed to work within a 10dB window. I think its from 0dBmV to -10dBmV (thats the forward path TV signal). I'd guess that as already has been said the signal is marginal in your friends house. Or the STB may just be a little 'deaf' and needs a little more signal.'

Theres no difference between the Pace and Samsungs really. The Samsungs (and Pace 4000, and 4010) have a different MPEG chipset to the original boxes. Return path problems shouldn't stop the forward path working.

Update on this, nice chap came round today and installed a Samsung box for my neighbours. They haven't been back round so I presume everything must be working ok
