Slow web browsing again...

Any ntl techies here that could he me solve my web browsing problem?

I have run numerous speed tests and all came at correct for my package speed (was 750k but switched down to 300k until I stop browsing at modem speed).

Downloads fast as well. Web browsing with firefox or IE is so slow, most pages don't load until I click 'Go' or press enter for the 12 time!!!

Tried proxies and ntl's Peterborough 4 is actually working well enough to browse. I have had this issue with slow browsing for nearly 6 weeks and after loads of calls tests I get told it windows so reinstall. I installed linux (ubuntu) on second partition and that was just as slow so I'm sure it's not windows. Any why does speed tests and downloads go fine?

My STB (pace) needs rebooting every few days and recently I kept getting disconnected from broadband (second light off) and had to leave STB off for 3 mins. Once ntl support even had to send a 'refresh' (???) to get me back on network.

I am ready to give up and go adsl so thought I'd try here for one last try at solving this.

I did try a site http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed/ doing web test
Using no proxy settings (defaults to bagu) go avg 14kbps
Using manc proxies same again
Using pete proxies (cache-4) got 19kbps!!! (being sarcastic!!)

Will check here tomorrow while at work and can be online at home after 7pm.

Please help and thanks for reading!

ps. I have been told in may be worth asking for cable modem instead of stb?

Re: Slow web browsing again...

Have tried the speed tests in the link and get what I would expect for my current package (300k). As for upload test, always fails. Uploading from pc is useless, can't send emails to ntl smtp servers, can't upload websites to private ftp host servers. Only thing I have had success with was attaching a file in my web mail after trying to upload it over 10 times.

Another thing is recently last week I bought a broadband router as I was planning to have a second pc for kids (if I ever sort this problem out) and even when the pc is off the WAN is permanently flashing for incoming traffic. Is it normal on the STB to have traffic on my side of the network when nothing is using connection?

Re: Slow web browsing again...

Slow browsing, & virtually no upload?

Your STB shouldn't need to keep being rebooted like that, nor should you keep getting disconnected....

Definitely sounds like you have a problem.

Have you called ntl tech support about the rebooting, disconnections, & upload problem?

Cable modem - may be an idea to have one. Should be better than an STB. If you have problems with an STB BB connection, I think ntl will give you a cable modem if you ask. May depend on the area...there are quite a few ntl empoyees here, hopefully someone will see your thread & be able to help.

Re flashing lights when the PC is off - generally normal. Have a look at this: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d....html#activity

In the past when I have rang about the box rebooting whilst watching tv or using internet, they have checked box and told me it did not (they may as well shout liar at me). Unless I video record my ntl channel permanently to prove it (yet I don't have a vcr!) they say I must be wrong. As for the disconnects/hangs needing me to unplug it, I mentioned this in last two support calls to ntl and they said that was 'not an issue' and 'sometimes' the STB would need a reboot. So rebooting STB every other day and sometimes twice a day is normal operation for ntl......

Since the STB is so crap for TV I am planning to switch to Sky+ so maybe ntl will send me a SACM to replace the STB?

Is there anything I should check on STB just to see if anything is amiss on it?

thanks, Darren

Would that be with the 'bagu' servers? My problem has been on going for weeks now, is the problem with the proxy software recent?

Re: Slow web browsing again...

Those traces are fine.

ICMP traffic does not route via proxy servers so all they really prove is that your connection is ok.
