Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

My ntl landline can ends outbound calls when I hang up but inbound calls I canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t end by hanging up, it relies on the other person ending the phone call.

A friend accidentally phoned my home with their mobile in their pocket, I had no way of ending the phone call. I even unplugged my phone from the socket and that did not work!

Has anybody else noticed this?

I think it is just a problem with ntl lines?? Another reason to go back to bt?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

Happens to me more times than I like. Especially when someone's little sweetheart is playing with mummy's phone. Then I have to wait for the phone to be sorted by the childs parents. They are always so off hand when you complain. The number of times I find myself yelling down the phone to attract someones attention as well....

No, it's the same for BT, probably something to do with the technology needed for 3 way / call waiting etc.

I have not had this problem (and we have keypad locks on our home phones so are not the givers of such problems).
A rape/panic alarm would be good to put over the mouthpiece and attract attention though.

This was always the case with BT even before 3 way calling and call waiting and applies to both mobile and fixed line calls.

This is standard practice on all landlines and has been for decades.

Only the person making the call can actually end that call.

Re: Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

Back when it was charged by the unit, it would disconnect on the next unit count if the handset at other end had been replaced - not sure if any kind of timer applies now.

Re: Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

I've had this problem a lot with NTL, but on BT I've always been able to terminate the call by hanging up, and on picking up the receiver again all I get is a dial-tone. The first time I ever noticed this problem was when I moved to NTL (and I've got into the habbit of checking the line after hanging up).

Re: Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

I can confirm that a BT phone works in the same way.

If somebody calls a BT or NTL landline, the person who receives the call can replace the handset then pick up another handset on the same extension and continue the call as long as the caller has not hung up as well.

More annoying are those recorded spam calls that you get nowadays. Even if you hang up you cannot clear the line, you have to wait until the caller has finished its message!

Re: Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

This is odd, because I've sometimes got a recorded message with the three rising tone beeps at the start saying "the other party has disconnected".

Re: Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

If you replace the handset on an inbound call, the exchange should disconnect you after a small timeout period.

Re: Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

Call Clearing courtesy of google

6 Call Clearing
  • 6.1 Terminal Initiated Clearing
    6.1.1 By A Calling Terminal
The DDI will detect a calling terminal returning to an †˜On-Hookââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ state and initiate a †œNetwork Initiated Clearingââ‚ ‚¬Ã‚ sequence (described in 6.2 below) with the additional of an information message being sent to the called customer indicating the †˜CallerÃƒÂ¢à ¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€Š¾Ã‚¢ has cleared.
    6.1.2 By A Called Terminal
When the called terminal returns to the †˜On-Hookââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ state the DDI will detect the change of condition and initiate a time-out process lasting up to two minutes. After the time-out period has expired a †œNetwork Initiated Clearingââ‚ ‚¬Ã‚ sequence (described in 6.2 below) is offered to the calling terminal
  • 6.2 Network Initiated Clearing
The DDI interface will offer a sequence of clearing signals at the NTP as a result of terminal sending the call or a failure to send valid routing digits during call set-up

Re: Canââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t terminate inbound calls

So maybe the difference is NTL's timeout is longer, but BT choose a short timeout?
