Cheapest way to buy a laptop
Ok it's not information on how to, it's me asking how to
Basically I am about to start some courses and there is no way one PC between me and the misses is going to enough. So I though right a laptop makes sense but they aint cheap.
I am after something decent, doesn't have to be the latest thing but I would like it with some kind of warranty.
So does anyone know of any sites that offer referbished, end of line or clearence laptops please?
I thank you in advance

Re: Cheapest way to buy a laptop
Wow, looks good, does a lot more than I wanted, but nice. I honestly thought (or maybe hoped ) Tiny had gone out business.
All I'm after is something say with 20 gig HD, CD writer ( combo DVD drive would be good), 256 RAM, decent processor, it wont be for playing games on so graphics card isn't a bother.
I will go on look at that one on Tiny now though, it's miles better than my PC

Re: Cheapest way to buy a laptop
I'm not overly sure what the alternative to on-board graphics would be with a LapTop....
And on that note, a question.
Do you need a laptop?
I ask this because basic rule of thumb says a lappy is one third more expensive to buy and two thirds more expensive to upgrade when compared with a PC.

Re: Cheapest way to buy a laptop
tiny AFAIK was bought by time who does the supanet ISP thing as you can see with the modem stuff.
There are cheaper models of laptops available im sure. I agree with Stuart_W. Unless you need the space or portability then a desktop version is better both spec wise and cheaper as well as cheaper to upgrade.

Some of the acer lap tops have radion GFX.
I was thinking a laptop would be good as I am not limited to using it at home but at college also. So I think a laptop is the bext idea, plus my misses would be none too happy with a 2nd PC to clutter up the house

Re: Cheapest way to buy a laptop
WATCH OUT for any Time/Tiny PC if you plan to use dialup access.
I get this a lot at work now. Some PCs from Time/Tiny are being sold with the dialup settings and modem LOCKED to use Supanet only...it seems you have call a premium rate number and they will talk you through setting up a temporary Supanet dialup to download a release file.
I'm getting significant numbers of people trying to get on the ntl unmetered service who cannot, and it transpires this is the problem.
Don't know which PCs it affects, but in my mind it's a totally insidious practice and ought to be illegal, after all Microsoft keep getting in a row for bundling software with Windows, Supanet's actions are even worse since at least you can install alternatives in Microsoft's case without paying them any more money!

Evesham are pretty good, everyone I know who has bought from them seem to be delighted with the product and the after-sales support.

Slightly off topic - But get your company to sponsor you on a MBA at Cranfield University they give you a free laptop!
