Yeah, I know what you mean, I was actually thinking of deleting the post, didn't want to rub it in peoples face.... And I took no offence - it's cool...
I know what you mean - it is a shame they do this, but they could get rid of me straight away..... And I do feel sorry for people who are loosing their jobs - I speak from experience!
I did ask about it, I didn't even realise there was a call center in notts - I knew the old Diamond cable place was there, but wasn't sure if the call centre side had moved.....

Good luck when you start on Monday...
IMPO
I would have thought it was cheaper to train someone over six weeks than temp for 6months to see how they are working with customers then really need to be perm jobs otherwise they will be forever training for six weeks at more expense to the company...
To train then only emply temps defeats the idea of tryiong to improve the CS to the benefit of the company or customers.

Yeah, I must admit I'm a little surprised they'd do it via temps, unless they're understaffed in that region.
What is it they do at Nottingham anyway - when I went for it, she didn't really know too much - Do all places do the same - for example I thought CM TS is in Swansea, or is it spread over all offices?

As well as the various technical departments, afaik Daleside has a payment centre, cust services call centre, telesales, credit control and retentions departments . There are also support departments such as IT and Site services/facilities etc.
At a guess I would say the reason for the position being temporary is that bodies are needed now for roles that won't exist after the restructure is completed sometime in the next 18 months. Why take someone on full time when you might end up having to make them redundant, whereas if you take on a temp you got a known quantity if you need extra bodies to be full time when the dust has settled.

That would make logical sense Stu - especially if certain areas were closing and others ultimately expanding.
Good Luck with the new Job chambece

Cheers for that - That sounds about right, they said that there *may* be some permy places after the restructuring, and that the reason for the temp posts were to take things up to the restructuring....
It'd be a little nicer if i was a little more prepared, but things have all come about rather quick, and it has only been someone from the agency that I have spoke to.

Good luck with the job.
Amazes me though as NTL seem to have no ethics at all.
Just laid a barrow load of people onto redundancy and they advertise for more.
My am I glad that I am out of there now working for a decent company who actually put a freeze on any new jobs whether it be permanent or temporary until everyone affected has had the opportunity to apply for any new vacancies regardless of location.

Re: New Job - Start on Monday
Maybe I can add a slant on this for the Temp vs Perm argument?
As a computer Contractor since 1996 there is reasons why companies take on Temp people sometime in preference to Perm. If you take on a Perm person you normally have to pay them wages, do there TAX, maybe even pay them Pensions, give them sick days and holidays along with training - all adds up money wise.
Now a contractor (not sure if this is the same as temp) - none of the above applies, you not in for whatever reason, they dont have to pay you - simple as that. The other side is its quicker to get rid of a temp person than a perm by just finishing there contract.
Now if ive got this all wrong (cos Temp might be well diff to contractor) then sorry about that - just some jobs do not require perm position all the time (such as a PC Rollout for example) and this is where Temp / COntractors come into there own..

I start in swansea's call centre tomorrow on broadband tech support, they've hired me as a temp aswell, I allways thought a temp gets the same as perm just theres a timelimit on the contract.
