Re: Intel 82801aa ac'97 audio Driver
Try this one
http://www.magic-pro.com/download/ot...c_20010718.exe
You didn't mention what OS you're using and this one covers 98/ME and 2K, not sure about XP.
Remeber to completely uninstall the old driver first.

Re: Intel 82801aa ac'97 audio Driver
First step is to make sure the on-board audio is not turned off in bios.
Are you getting the AC97 showing in device manager?
If so check the windows update as they also carry updates for the AC97 that may help.

Re: Intel 82801aa ac'97 audio Driver
Thanks for the comments:
Bifta - link does not work
AC97 is not showing in the device - showing as SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio
When the machine was XP (68mb - very slow, hence the reason for changing), is was AC97. AC97 is showing in BIOS
Now running Win98se

Re: Intel 82801aa ac'97 audio Driver
Try this one its for XP but may still work.
http://www.windowsxp-drivers.com/drivers/52/52874.htm
Will post again if I find an alternate seems a few are having probs locating drivers for this version of AC97.
Meantime did you check windows update to see if it lists an updated driver?

Link works fine for me, not sure why it doesn't for you, SoundMAX = hardware, ac97 is the codec, so it is the correct driver, have you tried any from searches on google?

Re: Intel 82801aa ac'97 audio Driver
Thanks for all the help - but still having problems!
Not sure why, but the link to magic-pro is still not working - and I have tried 2 machines.
Downloaded the XP Driver which seemed to be accepted - and it has not seemed to help.
When the PC boots up, at the same time as the Logon Screen comes on, I get the following error message (even though I have not logged on)
'The Audio Hardware is not responding correctly. Run Set-Up and restart your hardware configuration'
I need to 'OK' this 3 times before it goes.
Ay suggestions again
Very much appreciated...... Lee

Re: Intel 82801aa ac'97 audio Driver
Sounds like maybe there is a problem with bios settings.
It could be they were changed because the PC originally had an extra sound card fitted and settings changed in bios to accomodate this.
Difficult to tell without actually having the box in front of me to play around with.
Have a check to see what settings are showing for plug and play too, also any allocation of IRQ numbers etc.
One last thing to check is trying different PCI slots for any add-in cards just in case a shared resource is behind the problem.
One solution if conflicts are to blame is removing sets of devices in device manager and then letting XP re-add them all back as this changes the way the rersources are allocated.
You may also need to check for an update for the bios itself as this often happens with older boards and XP.
EDIT: LOL Sorry forgot you are not on XP because of the low memory so maybe consider adding more and re-trying XP so the above tips can help

Use this link, http://www.pcpartner.com/support/uti...1x_drv.htm#81X as I said, it's your motherboard manufacturers web site with a list of all relevant drivers.

Re: Intel 82801aa ac'97 audio Driver
Thanks - it is now finally working.
The Motherboard file gave me a fright - loaded fine, then caused a few errors on re-boot, and then when I when to Control Panel, all the display went hay-wire (like 3 images all slightly miss-aligned, and impossible to read).
But re-booted, no errors, and display seems to be OK. Also, got the sound drivers to work.
thanks to all who helped - this site proves its worth yet again
