Wireless broadband help appreciated

Ok I'm verging on the edge of insanity at this point and hopefully some kind soul will be able to save me before I tumble into the abyss.

Where to start......

The laptop is running XP and pc is running Me. The wireless broadband connection is Binatone WL 1000. Followed all instructions and everything looked good. Installed hardware, software. Laptop can see the access point and has good connection but there is no connection to the internet no matter you do, tapdancing and handstands included. Have pinged with success from both machines, have unistalled, reinstalled til I'm blue in the face. Spent a long time on the telephone to Binatone being talked through all the steps for him to say that what was needed was some up to date software from NTL???? Rang NTL and basically they said unplug the lot and wait a couple minutes etc, etc. Failing that take it back and buy such and such instead.

They have no idea what the man from Binatone meant about software.

So back to nice man at Binatone who talked us through some more steps to no avail. He was left baffled, I was left sectionable. We changed the link cable to a crossover but still no joy. At the moment it's been about 23 hours with very little sleep. I really don't want to admit defeat but I'm running out of options and prozac

I also have 3 IP addies. AP is 192.168.1.1 , Laptop 192.168.1.2 and PC 192.168.1.3

I'm sure I've left out loads of important relevant info but as everything other than being able to browse the net from the laptop I couldn't think of anything specific to add

Any helpful suggestions will be much appreciated

You cannot share a cable modem connection between 2 or more PCs with merely a wireless access point. You need a NAT router, or a combined wireless NAT router as the base station. As far as I know Binatone don't market a wireless NAT router, so I guess you have only a simple access point.

What is the make and model number of whatever you are using as a wireless base station, so we can check?

First of all - welcome to the site

Everyone here is very helpfull - I am sure that we can sort out your problem...

O.K. One ot two questions for you.

1. Are the clients (pc's) using dhcp or have you set them up manualy ? If you are not using dhcp you may have missed the default gateway entry or the dns entry's

2. Are you using a set top box to access the net ? If you are you need to insure 2 things - 1. you are using a cross over cable between the set top box and the router. 2. You have set the router to clone the mac address of the network card you had it plugged into or register the new macx address online.

I hope this is of help - If there is any more info you can give us it would be helpfull. You could run ipconfig /all from a dos prompt on all the machines and post the results - This would help.

This is the basic set up.

I have no idea as to what is what as I was basically given the stuff and told to get on with it. I wasn't aware a router was needed and only had basic instructions to follow (which seemed pretty adequate until it came to the crunch)

It is a set top to answer part of question two. At this precise moment the host pc is unplugged from the network (I lost connection somehow and gave up) and I have direct connection to the laptop.

As to question 1 that is a very good possibility as I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be putting so thinking back through the fog that seems pretty relevant. Also if you have the patience it would be helpful if you explained in blonde terms. Whether it's the scrambled brains or the last few strands of blonde inbetween the fast appearing grey I'm sort of lost with tech speak. I'm not usually so thick

You can do it if one PC has two network cards. You need to explain what is plugged into what and then we will tell you why it doesn't work. You also don't say what AP you have, the WL 1000 being an PCMCIA 802.11b card.

Edit: You need to plug the CM and the access point into the "gateway" PC. I will assume the desktop is going to be the gateway.

You can either connect the gateway PC to the AP via the RJ45 connection or buy a wireless PCI or USB device. The Cable modem must be connected to the PC via USB or Ethernet (preferable).

You then need to install some routing software on the gateway machine, such as Windows ICS (preferably not!), Winroute, Sygate Home Network, etc. This will translate the requests from the laptop back and forth thru the gateway PC.

a. Drown my sorrows big stylee and worry about it tomorrow
b. Aim entire equiptment with precise accuracy at stupid person who caused me my 24 hours of futile frustrations
or
c. Sell the laptop and buy a dog

To share the connection with more than one computer you need something called NAT or Network Address Translation ...

You could connect the access point to a router and share the connection but I dont think that what you have is going to work..

So it looks like this:

Inet <----> Cable Modem <----> Gateway PC <--wire(less)--> AP <--| AIR |-->WL1000 in Laptop

I am assuming you will use a cable to connect the gateway PC to the AP as the pack doesn't come with a wireless PIC card for the gateway machine.

Yes it will work without a router, he/she has all the stuff apart from a software router for the gateway machine.

Ahhh no worries mate. To be quite honest it's a ruddy relief. At least I can give up and spend time with more important things, like.........ummmm chocolate

Your not sunk yet m8 -- As keyser says .. It can be done. The only problem is that without a router you will need to leave the gateway pc on.

Are you basically saying I need another card of similarity to the client for success?
