Re: NTL blocking BitTorrent ports? (6881 to 6889)
Sorry to bring this up again but I am very suspicious of NTL attempting to do something to minimise use of BT.
On thursday, I was downloading through BT at near capacity not using the default ports, then my modem went offline, when it came back up dl/ul were reduced.
Starting a new BT download today, I couldn't make any connections at all, until I shifted the listening ports away again, now speeds are back up quite high. It does seem highly suspicious.

Had no problem connecting last night with the standard ports and I'm also using a firewall.

Fantastic! This problem has been driving me mad. I was pretty certain that the ports weren't blocked by NTL or my firewall as I could telnet to them from outside the NTL network... It never occurred to me that bittorrent would use the proxy settings from Internet Explorer (or is this just another example of how IE is intimately linked with Windows, despite the court rulings?). Thanks SuperCow!

Re: NTL blocking BitTorrent ports? (6881 to 6889)
Hallo all!
Ok, just out of interest here, I have assumed of late that the world of filesharing was just going downhill. To me, getting a full download rate is just laughable. I, on average get around 2-3kb/s no matter what I use. Normally use Kazza Lite but have since tried just about everything else under the sun, including BT, DC++, Shareazza, Limewire, you name it, I've tried it. But everything I try is just pants! Time to download an (out of copyright! ) mp3 - 6 years and 31 days!
I'm using a cable modem which is connected to a linksys router (the 4 port one with 41 at the end of the name). I remember the halcyan days of getting 50/60 kb/s, but can't remember if this was only on ADSL. Am I missing something here? Thanks guys! (I lurk a lot but am a shy type!)
P.S. the Shadow's BT client is always on Yellow and this is apparently a bad thing. I'm not running a firewall, windows or otherwise.

Chuckle! i'd have to agree with you, it's more than likely! but the question is, what?
I can't think of what settings i'd need to fiddle with. Everything is pretty much set at default. really cheesing me off.

Re: NTL blocking BitTorrent ports? (6881 to 6889)
well if ur torrent client is showing yellow that normally means its behind a firewall that needs ports 6881-9 open
if u connect through a router thats your problem
if yoru running windows xp and that firewall is on then thats ur problem ..
other than that id ask u sure you dont have a firewall on
www.grc.com take the shields up test and see what it finds

Re: NTL blocking BitTorrent ports? (6881 to 6889)
oh u are behind a router..
right well u need to have a quick lesson in port forwarding
its in the manual and pretty easy you want ports 6881-6889 i think (as torrent will use 6881 and if thats being used will move on till it finds a suitble one) if u want in shadows client u can edit the ports to something else of your chosing
anyway dunno what router you have (it has a 41 in it)
but:
http://www.linksys.com/support/top10...%20BEFSR41.asp
or for the other router i found with a "41"
http://www.linksys.com/support/top10faqs/BEFSX41/ have a read of the port forwading/trigger
torrents good but i recomend emule
(that uses port 4662 + 4672) and have a browse of sharereactor.com the emule web site offers a load of help so you cant go wrong or pm me i will help ya

It must be your settings - I use BT, and i'm on the 1Mbit package, and quite often get d/l's of over 100KB/sec - go to your network connections (control panel), right click on your connection icon, select properties, then advanced tab at the top. Make sure the 'protect my computer and network by limiting access.....' ISN'T ticked.
Also check you're not using a proxy server in IE (tools > internet options > connection > lan settings)
HTH...

Re: NTL blocking BitTorrent ports? (6881 to 6889)
*hides* its not to hard as long as you know Your IP and what ports you want to forward to your IP you will be fine
If your using a router that will be your internal IP ..it will look like 192.168.123.* no doubt

If you are going out via a router then you may have a firewall without knowing it. Nearly all home broadband routers have something called nat built in (called ipchains/IP Masquerading by Linix peeps ) . Without a nat you would only be able to connect one pc.
If you have a router with nat then you need to set up port forwarding or put the machine with BT on a dmz.

Re: NTL blocking BitTorrent ports? (6881 to 6889)
dont enable the DMZ option it will leave your pc open to all sorts of nasties thats why u have port forwarding etc
