help with gaming
I am having serios problems playing Unreal Tournament (not 2003) online. Cold someone tell me what type of connection i should select, and if i need any special settings to make online games work.
The game defaults to LAN connection, but i dont know if this is because the game thinks that is right or not. I am a home user, on a single machine, so am unsure if LAN is correct, though i have tried it with no success.
If anyone can explain this, your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Are you running NTL Broadband 600k?

Re: help with gaming
If you are a broadband customer then LAN is the correct option to connect through. You may have to look at things like firewalls/routers that could be blocking the game from connecting and make sure they are disabled / configured correctly and try again ...

Re: help with gaming
The other thing is...
Do you mean what you need to connect to for playing against other people online? Because if your picking LAN for this, then you need other PC's directly linked to your PC for this to work in a Network...
If it is this you mean, then try picking internet game as the option, as this will allow you to search for online games against other internet users
Not sure if this applies, but no harm in posting it in case

Re: help with gaming
What i am doing is selecting internet game. That downloads a list of games that are being played at that time. When i try to connect to any of the games a connecting message appears, and thats as far as i get. With the other options it tries, and fails to connect, with internet games it starts to connect and just keeps going like that, it doesnt connect, or disconnect.
I hope this makes some sense, if anyone plays UT on here, could they tell me what they did to get it running.
BTW, i always disable my firewall before playing, just in case. And i don't even know what a router is

Re: help with gaming
Which servers are you trying to connect to?
You may have more luck using the Gamespyarcade servers as they alwys worked best when my son played the game when it first came out.
http://www.gamespyarcade.com/
I also seem to recall that the original game install needed a few downlaodable patches from the main site to cure the inevitable bugs so worth checking that out too. There will also be a longish wait to play some of the on-line games as your system will need to download updated maps and other details for the specific level being played on any server you are trying to connect to.
Out of interest does the game itself play ok on your own PC?
OK That's all I can think of for now but will check with my son next time I see him and see if he remebers exactly the step he used.

Re: help with gaming
The game runs fine, and when trying to connect to servers it downloads the required maps and models etc.. but then nothing happens, it says connecting at the top, and press esc to start at the bottom, but esc takes me back to the menu and forces me to retry. At no point does the game ever start. The same happens with gamespy arcade and gamespy 3d

Re: help with gaming
OK as I said I will have a word with my son and see if he has any other ideas but this may not be for a day or so as he is working weird shifts and I need to catch him when he is actually awake. LOL

Q1: Is your PC behind a NAT router?
Q2: Do you have a firewall running on the PC?
If either of those is true, then they can prevent online games running until they have been specially configured for the game. Consult the game's documentation for details of open ports required.
As for the "LAN connection" thing, if that is a speed configuration for the game, then you need to turn the connection specification down to "dual-ISDN" level, otherwise you will be overloading your cable upstream limit. The correct setting for this depends on your cable modem tier of service, which you haven't told us yet.

As sociable pointed out, you'll need ALL of the patches for this game to play online, they won't download when you connect to a server so you'll need to download and install them yourself (if you haven't already), you should be able to get them here:
