Re: Router/Modem question.

You should not have problems mixing hardware, especially from the big brands. I have a linksys router, apple airport express and intel centrino laptop all happily connected. Wireless hotspots would struggle if compatibility was as bad as everyone made out.

The main compatibility problems come from security enforcement, not connectivity itself.

Being as you web connection is 1.5 or 3 mb at most to link to the web internally at 108 mb is a not really necessary, though good if you are doing a lot of streaming of media around your wireless network.
To improve range, try some antenna mods.
Here's a rather drastic one for a laptop wireless card....

Less drastic are passive coil antenna mods that simply slip over the wireless router antennas and PCI card antennas.

Re: Router/Modem question.

You're right that is a bit drastic and with no effort I found a cake tin mod from Finland with very clear tech drawings and (unfortunately) not so clear English translation. The proof of the pudding is what increase in range or signal strength do these make? Where can I find more info on the simple "slip over" types and likewise are they worth the effort? (stone house you see)
..... and yes flange is a nice word; same auditory effect as sponge!??!

Re: Router/Modem question.

I would establish your network first before you worry about increasing range. I found the range and reliability on mine increased by a good multiple by putting the wireless router on a top shelf rather than at desk level (also took it away from the PC, CRT etc). There are easier options to tackle first.

Mine improved by angling the antennae slightly differently
