Re: dvdboxoffice?
Ive ordered from them, a pc game not dvds but they were fine, no import charges for me, and delivery took about a week and a half, from when i ordered it, was dispatched about 5 -6 days after ordering. Which i thought was pretty good!

Re: dvdboxoffice?
I've used them loads for R1 DVDs over the past 4 years or so, & have also recently used them for a couple of games too.
The *only* time I was ever stung with import duty & VAT was one time when I chose to use DHL for delivery instead of the free airmail delivery.
Items are generally sent out within a day or two, unless they're not in stock. Delivery (via free airmail) can take from 1 to 2 weeks, usually only 1.
They provide an excellent service, & I highly recommend them.

Only recently when I had something direct from CD-WOW sent by standard mail, I got stung for the duty. Made the whole thing much more expensive than if I'd bought from the high street.
Anything over £18.00 exceeds the personal import value, and runs the risk of duty.

True.
Although with DVDBoxoffice, everything I have ever had sent from them via the free shipping option has got through without me having to pay VAT & import duty. I think it's as they seem to often send things to you indirectly, rather than directly from Canada (e.g. most of the stuff I have ordered from them has actually been shipped to me from, IIRC, London).
Also depends on if the shipper actually puts the true value on the declaration. Couriers like DHL & so on always tell the truth for the value, & so with them you have a greater risk of being caught out by Customs for duty.

Nope. But the value threshold is higher than normal, at least.

3.5 Is duty and VAT charged on gifts?
A gift is not free of duty and VAT merely because it is a gift. The EC agreement allows them to be imported free of charges only if they comply with these rules:
Rule
Description
1.
The value of the goods must not exceed 45 EURO (currently £36).
2.
They must be correctly declared.
3.
They must have been sent from a private person abroad to another person in this country.
4.
The gift must be for the use of either yourself or your family.
5.
There is no commercial or trade element and they have not been paid for either directly or indirectly.
6.
Any alcohol, tobacco products, perfumes or toilet waters are within the allowances shown in paragraph 3.4. anything over those allowances is liable to charges.
7.
They must be of an occasional nature only, such as a birthday or anniversary.
