Windows Live Messenger

I'm using Windows Live Messenger, everything is working ok apart from the mic/sound. I'll contact my mate, activate the webcams, but when we try to talk he can hear me but I can't hear him. We have both gone through all the connections/settings & tests & all seems to work fine. Has anyone has this problem before & if so what can we do??

Yes, we have both recordered something with no problem, when we call each other through Messenger we can hear the ringing through the head phones but nothing when we try & speak.
