Moving!!!

Hello all,

It looks like I will be dumping NTL in the very near future and I need to hunt down another ISP.

I'm moving to a new area that is not cabled for NTL so it looks like I'll be getting <insert name here> as an ISP.

So - it'll no doubt be a BT telephone line with ADSL...but who do I go with?

Don't have a postcode or telephone number yet so the "availability" sections on most ISP site are a bit useless at the moment!

Any ideas on providers? I've seen UKOnline on somebody's sig here - any good?

Lee

Re: Moving!!!

These people are useful for answering that question:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/

Their current top pick for ADSL is Zen, about whom I have heard many good things. I may switch to them when I'm out of contract with my current supplier.

Re: Moving!!!

adslguide is another good resource. I've heard good things about Nildram - although as I'm on NTL it's a second hand recommend!

---------- Post added at 16:44 ---------- Previous post was at 16:41 ----------

Have you checked adsl availability on BT's website yet (link on adslguide)? I plugged in my postcode and it said I'm unlikely to even get 512K as I'm miles from the exchange. Worth checking.

Re: Moving!!!

Go on to samknows and check for LLU first, that should be a priority because the deals will be better.

You can get plusnet for £14.99 a month and thats "upto" 8mb depending on distance from exchange etc.... there caps are kinda weird... i.e. you can only down Xgb between 8am and 4pm, and Xgb between 4pm and midnight, bubt there usage between midnight and 8am is unmetered. Let me know if your interested, and i'll send you a link to all the info (if i can find it)

Nooooo don't do it, they throttle, cap, as you near the caps they throttle harder and harder and harder.

If you use P2P / Usenet don't touch Plusnet. Especially the really cheapy 'Plus' package it's even more heavily shaped than their £21.99 service.

I Use plusnet... quite happily getting 6-7mb on newsgroups.... they do say if you go over your "allowed usage" they will cap your speed... or you can cap it yourself using their control panel..... Been with em for a few months now... no problems at all

Cap your own speed? How odd Glad it's working alright for you though

http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist...&Board=plusnet

Caveat emptor!

Stop angling for a referral btw

OP Check out http://www.samknows.com see what's available at your exchange.

Yeah.. its designed so that you can prime your connection for specific tasks... such as gaming (so if your on a network, gaming traffic takes priority over newsgroups etc.. or http takes priority... etc... really neat

But have you checked www.samknows.com to see if your exchange has even been unbundled (& if so by who?)?

Re: Moving!!!

That means you should be able to get UK Online BB.

Do notice it says cable is available, if it really is available and you want it that is.
