I tried plugging the ethernet cable from my cable modem into another computer but the internet didn't work. Should it work like that, or do I need to run the NTL setup disk on the other computer?
If that is the case, how do you connect a router (I'm getting a wireless router this week)?
As Chris says the software is not needed at all.
Just make sure you fully turn off the modem and PC, connect the cable to new PC, then switch modem on again, and power up your PC.
Everything should work.
