Problems in Romford ?

I'm getting disconnections every 15 mins or so today, nothing has changed on my machine, I also see that the Proxies in this area have been turned off, and DNS is very very slow, specifiying manual DNS fixes that slowness but it seems there is a problem, anyone else in the Romford/SevenKings area experiencing disconnections ?

The service seems to be getting worse and worse here lately

Re: Problems in Romford ?

Let me know if it's still happening later Ian and I'll check when I get home, not on NTl at work so can't check from here.

Re: Problems in Romford ?

Thanks Paul, it seems to be full speed downloads that cause the disconnection, the modem stops responding, rebooting the PC makes it work again for a while.
Something is up it seems

Are you still having problems? I know the network engineers have been in the IG6 area, if you PM me your post full post code I can check for you.

Re: Problems in Romford ?

Ian hmm so your speeds drop on proxyless browsing, or is it you seem to have general speed problems and at same time the proxies are off?

Reason I am asking is because we know ntl have peering issues so when the proxies are on these are hidden when browsing commno websites since external transit isnt used, so with the proxies disabled this problem would flare up.

Re: Problems in Romford ?

I was having problems with the return path (with upstream shooting up to 60+db on disconnection) and ntl sent some network engineers to fix the green cabinets..

This was about 2 weeks ago, IG6 area

Re: Problems in Romford ?

There were HFC issues yesterday affecting both IG8 and RM6 areas, but these problems should have been rectified this morning.

Since I've come back and the proxies are off and I have a new IP it seems that my speeds have halved just about everywhere at any time of day, the speed test on this site is 'stuttery' and sometimes times out.

RonJon is trying to help me at the moment, I've tried specifying other proxies and they make minor differences but not much.

Re: Problems in Romford ?

Just to post with the answer to my problem, it appears that somehow while I was away the network driver for my motherboards socket got corrupted or broken somehow, there was an update dated March 2006 so I installed it and the problem seems to have been fixed, full speeds again and no more disconnections, I'm at a loss as to how this could be fine one minute and broken the next but there you go.

Thanks to RonJon for all his help and also Richard.

Re: Problems in Romford ?

...just "up the road" from you and was getting severe dns errors/dropouts for about a week, but it stopped a few days ago...almost. Still getting the occasional dns timeout, but its much better than what it was this time last week.

Re: Problems in Romford ?

I'm also in the romford area (RM6) and I have also notice that for the last 5 days or so browsing has been very painful.

Downloads appear to be fine, the problem appear to be slow/failing dns resolution, ( a test I did was to ping the sites I wanted to go to, put their IP address in to my host table, clear the browser cache then surf to the site. The response was then instant for these sites).

I don't use any specific cache (I'm assuming I go through the transparent cache though)

As I say the problem appears to have started for me about 4-5 days ago, and is worse at peak times

The transparent cache for our area is currently off.
I also had the DNS issues you describe a few days ago, they seem fixed now but I found that when it was happening if I manually set NTL's DNS servers then it fixed the problem, might be worth a try ?
