Telewest completes speed increases
www.cableforum.co.uk/article/254/telewest-completes-speed-increases
Regarding the article from the front page, which you can visit above.
I do think it is time that NTL customers get this speed boost very, very soon, because as of now NTL's prices and speed just isn't competitive enough, Telewest's speed and prices are now competitive.
I'd be happy with 4Mbps Broadband ...

Re: Telewest completes speed increases
Yeah 10Mb at £34.99 isn't anywhere near competitive.
I'd far rather have the telewest option at 10Mb for £35.00

Ok, one thing is NTL's 10MB isn't unlimited, Telewest is. Telewest offer 2MB for £17.99 NTL only offer 1MB, Telewest offer 4MB for £25, NTL offer only 2MB.
Other companies such as eclipse offer unlimited 8Mbps Broadband for £14.99, Be offer unlimited 24MB for £24.
Carphonewarehouse offer 8Mbps broadband for £20.99 with all the extras. So yeah ...

Re: Telewest completes speed increases
I'd have thought 1 pence would be considered a negligable amount.
It would be nice to see similiar speeds on the ntl side of things.

Re: Telewest completes speed increases
The 32.99 pack should go 2MB BB instead of 1Meg. That would be an offer hard to resist lol.
1Meg is ok for me, just dont like the slow upload. I could do with an extra 10kBps upstream.
Lets hope ntl follow telewest on this one.

Re: Telewest completes speed increases
i dont understand y the same company [now as they are merged] are [and can] offer differentiated products... its just not fair... also considering it took telewest soo many months to get the upgrades done, i dont see my speeds being moved to the so called 10mb anytime this year [even if they announce they will move every1 to 10mb minimum in JUNE], its ntl, and will take a minimum 2 years i guess, considering they told me 5-6 years ago bband is coming in ur area in 6 months, which only ended up arriving end of last year.... not too optimistic about ntl now............

Re: Telewest completes speed increases
ntl haven't had a chance to finish implementing the traffic shaping and throttling hardware that'll slow your connection down when you hit your limit for the month then offer to charge you per GB yet, and there are the details of per protocol shaping and caching that are going to need to be done. They are struggling with the existing bandwidth demand going by recent entertainment so are either going to need more bandwidth or a smarter network.
To take all tiers to 10Mbit with shaping, etc is optimistic, without it is suicidal

Can you seriously not understand why that would be the case?
Two very big companies, two different sets of computer systems, two different sets of staff, two different sets of marketing material ... if you think it's a simple matter to suddenly make all that into one single offering, you are in cloud cuckoo land. These things take lots of time. Don't expect to see any convergence for some months at least.

I don't think you've been listening. Just because all the assets are owned by one single company does not mean that all the staff, computer systems and marketing programmes wake up one morning to find they have miraculously merged into one great big whole. Corporate mergers take a lot of time, planning and money and most of the work can't start until after the actual purchase of one company by another is complete. Trust me, I have been involved in more than one, I know what I'm talking about.

Last i heard NTL are not planning on moving everyone to 10MB anyway. That got replaced with the "1mb,2mb Unlimited" advert.

Re: Telewest completes speed increases
Lets say BT gave half of there 2.3Million customers 8MB for £29.99 and the other half exactly the same for £19.99, that wouldn't be fair would it, same here ... maybe they should have got NTLs network inline with Telewest's before they announced the merger, that would have saved angy NTL customers like myself

Oh right, and which similarly-sized company has BT just bought that it might find itself doing that then?
Aside from the fact that your analogy is plain nonsense, what you're suggesting is utterly impossible, for a great many reasons - not least because it would be illegal to plan a merger to that depth without announcing it to the stock exchange.
You are just going to have to be a little bit patient. You are not paying any more for your service now than you were before the merger, so you haven't lost out. I don't see what you have to be angry about. For all you know, when they do manage to consolidate the services, the Telewest customers will end up paying the same as you, instead of you getting a discount.

Re: Telewest completes speed increases
Would you be happier getting upgraded to 10 meg for free and hitting sppeds less than you had on 2 meg because now everyone on you street has been upgraded to 10 meg and are leeching 24/7?
Or would you be happier on your 2 meg, hitting 2 meg speeds even though 1or 2 people on your street are leeching at 10 meg (but pay for it)
I would personally only upgrade to a new product if the network could handle it - Im not disagreeing with that fact that it was a bit silly for ntl to go straight to 10 meg knowing (possibly) that they wouldnt be able to handle it. IMHO, it would have made more sense either to offer something like 5 meg or 6 meg so atleast they could say its nearly as fast as MAXDsl and the network prob would have coped better - or had a longer trail period over a larger userbase? (Im not really sure if this was trialed) to make sure it would all go well.
But I guess it doesnt always work like that in real life and business after all at the end of the day youre there to make profit. Lets wait a bit and see what happens, if nothing does, theres always DSL
P.S. All the stuff above is my opinion on the matter, it may be shockingly factually incorrect, and if it is, please fell free to correct me, Im here to learn and feel free to disagree with me if you think Im wrong too.
