Angry Corrupt Downloads!??

Hi, I've just had NTL's 10Mb service installed and, so far, had full speed all week.

EXCEPT... most of my downloads are corrupt!!

For example... Four times I've tried to download a 200Mb file (an Apple OSX update) and every time, the file has been corrupted and is unusable... I've tried downloading on various PC/Mac combinations with the same problem, and no, there's nothing wrong with the Mac that I'm trying to install it on : )

That's just one example... Various downloads are also scrambled, and I can see I'm going to reach my 75Gb limit sooner than expected.

Has anybody else had this problem and is there a cure?

Do NTL honour their 30 day money back guarantee if not satisfied (as proudly displayed on their sign-up page), as I can see that I'm going to switch back to BT soon!

Re: Corrupt Downloads!??

Weird one that. Are you using a P2P package or straight web/usenet download?

Andyr1960, to CableForum.

Can you tell us where you are downloading the file from? Give a link if possible.

Re: Corrupt Downloads!??

They're all official downloads from the Apple web site, iTunes, iPod updater etc... all corrupt, including various iPod videos from the Giganews server!

I have noticed severe burst rates (if that's what you'd call it) sometimes reaching 2000mbs, twice the rate of my 10Mb line - maybe that's the cause, but how to stop it?

The zip/dmg files seem to download OK, but give errors when to try to de-compress, this happens on my PC, G5 and MacBook.

None of the downloads are via P2P...

I'm in the South Manchester area, will try again tonight.

Re: Corrupt Downloads!??

Go into IE and delete your temporary internet files in tools>options.

Some times if you select run when downloading with ie, there can be problems when that particular folder fills up.

Re: Corrupt Downloads!??

I'm in South Manchester aswell - I downloaded Fedora core 4 about 4 times and got a corrupt download.

Very annoying when your downloading a 2.5GB file.

I'd be impressed to see a Cisco uBR burst to 2000Mbps

In any case corrupt downloads are usually down to cable modem or HFC network issues, they are however a bit of a slut to track down and the best plan is to discuss this issue with cable modem support however I'd expect this if it's not a modem issue to need escalation as they won't really have the tools to diagnose issues like this.

Re: Corrupt Downloads!??

Original poster: how old are your computers? If they're more than say 4 years old and your downloads are always or nearly always corrupt. This is a symtom of failing memory simms which need replacing. Do a google search, lots of stuff out there on this

Re: Corrupt Downloads!??

Think I may have found the problem...

I have a Belkin wireless router that uses it's own Hi-Speed mode (125 HSM), which is supposed to give a 30% boost... Gone into the set up page and put it back to standard 802.11g mode.

[Quote from the Belkin manual]

Selecting "125 G PLUS mode" will result in all devices running in 125 G PLUS mode if all devices are capable of 125 G PLUS mode speeds. If any non-125 G PLUS mode device connects or associates with the network, the router will automatically shift the entire network back to Frame Bursting Mode.

Selecting "Frame Bursting" will result in all devices capable of Frame Bursting to function in frame bursting mode, and all clients not capable to operate in normal 802.11g modes. Frame Bursting mode supports both Frame Bursting enabled devices and non Frame Bursting enabled devices simultaneously. Frame Bursting mode is based on the unreleased 802.11e specification.

Selecting "Off" will disable all turbo modes

Everything seems to have settled down now

Re: Corrupt Downloads!??

If anyone is regularly getting corrupt downloads they should run http://www.memtest86.com/ for a few hours, before doing other investigation

watch some DVDs, sleep or make eyes at the significant other etc whilst it's running..
