Cheeky Request
This is a request for any kind hearted NTL employee who wouldnt want me to have to wait a week for my connection to be activated. Well, its actually for my sister but anyway - she already has a modem that somebodt left behind. The config file it has downloaded is unreg.cm but it has an IP address and can ping etc.. but everything else is blocked. I dont have the pin number yet but have the MAC address etc....
It would save the engineer a visit to install it and means my nephew stops giving me earache and can get on Cbeebies this weekend
Any to come to her rescue?

The modem she has is no good. She'll need her own which the installer will supply her when the appointment comes round.

Re: Cheeky Request
The modem appears to work and does everything I would expect it to do in its unregistered state. Its a 200 and I can get to the autoreg page. I'm just missing the PIN number as the welcome letter hasnt been sent yet.

Re: Cheeky Request
Thing is, it's just like getting one off ebay, no employee would touch it with a barge pole

Re: Cheeky Request
I think the full story is that the reason it is still at the premises is that her (ex) partner had a connection using that modem. He has since moved out but didnt take the modem. So its still the same address as it was, shes basically getting it reconnected under a different name

The installer needs to request registration.

Re: Cheeky Request
So I couldnt just get a PIN number or get somebody at NTL to do a manual registration? Don't suppose its worth tinging tech support? This really doesnt seem that difficult to resolve
Like I said, it would also save an engineer a visit as nothing needs physically doing - shes even still got the software (it wont be getting used but there you go)

NTL don't register modems purely on a customer's say so, as in a lot of cases, they have no reliable way of checking where that modem has come from. I know that in your case, they can probably check, but they apply that rule to everyone.
It also gives the installer a chance to check if there are likely to be any problems (bad signal etc).

If it's a new account, it's a new modem, which requires an engineers visit.

It would probably flag up an error saying the modem was already registered to the old account.
It is possible to remove the association between the modems MAC and the account but isn't likely to happen.
It looks like you will have to wait for the engineer visit.

Re: Cheeky Request
Well in that case - the only question left is. Prior to the new account being ordered, the only IP address that I could get on the PC was within the same range as the modem (ie 192.168.1.xxx). When checking the operation configuration, it read Network Access : Disabled.
After signing up for the account, the Network Access is now allowed and I have an IP in the range 81.97.xxx.xxx
This indicates to me that the only that needs to be done is visit the autoreg site and provide the PIN number and surname etc.... and it would then assign me a different IP address to allow full network access.
Is this correct or am I completely wrong to assume this?

Completely wrong as far as I know. As far as I am aware, You would be receiving an IP of 10.x.x.x if it wasnt registered.

You'v had employees, ex employees and some customers tell you the same thing - you can't get it live until you've had an engineer visit, with a new modem!!!!!
