Question NTL Hardware & Config.

Afternoon,

Im new here so excuse me if this has already been posted;

A friend of mine has been paying for NTL 300k, she has TV, phone from ntl as well.

She lost her pc in a break up with her other half and has now replaced the pc, however, her ex took the old cable modem when he took the old pc and has since sold it along with the cable modem.

She has now replaced the pc but is without a cable modem to hook up her broadband.

What hardware will she need to get the broadband up and running again?

thanks in advance for any help..

cheers.. wasted

Re: NTL Hardware & Config.

First she should report it to the Police, ntl own the cable modem, so he has stolen it, and illegally sold it. Secondly she needs to contact ntl and arrange for a replacement.

Worth noting that ntl will charge for that replacement.

Re: NTL Hardware & Config.

Nope.

It needs to be provided by Ntl in order to work on their network.

to the site BTW.

Re: NTL Hardware & Config.

Not when someone has run off with old one!

At a guess she will have to pay £50 call out. Not sure how much for CM, but doubt she'll get change from £100 for the whole job! From the tone of the OP, I'm guessing she won't get this back from the ex easily

Re: NTL Hardware & Config.

they actually have to get an engineer out to plug in a cable modem?

My word, im stunned. Why exactly?

Surely they just log the mac address (or similar, not used cable before) of the hardware and they send it pre-configured and you just plug it in?

Excuse my ignorance, ive been working with lans and wans for over 16 years but ive never used cable broadband, only adsl or kilostreams etc.

Can someone give me a technical run down of how cable bb services actually work?

Re: NTL Hardware & Config.

They could quite easily send one by mail to be plugged in but for a few reasons prefer to do it by engineer.

The most sensible answer I ever got for this was a combination of stock control (to stop modems wandering onto ebay when customers 'don't receive them) and to ensure they are up and running when the engineer leaves and don't have any signal problems etc.

Re: NTL Hardware & Config.

The do send an installer (not an engineer- there is apparently an important difference)to install the modem. Why? Probably partly so he or she can check that conditions (signal levels etc) are right for the modem to work, partly because an incorrectly connected modem or STB can introduce feedback to the network (thus affecting other people as well) and partly because most of NTL's customers have little or no knowledge of how Cable modems work.

Re: NTL Hardware & Config.

Here's a thought... what would happen if she cancelled her contract? I have heard that cable modems, as opposed to STBs, are not collected as they aren't as sought after by people on ebay. If she then signs-up again afterwards, wouldn't the installation be performed free-of-charge?

Re: NTL Hardware & Config.

i was thinking of that, wasnt sure if it would be collected or not, if it is its going to cost £50, then shes gotta be re-connected which i guess would be free.

So worst case is £50 instead of £100.

gotta be worth a try. thx
