Internet thru STB
Hi,
Have NTL package which includes digital TV and internet with a Pace STB. Digital TV works fine, excellent reception. Unable to get internet thru STB though. However, if I connect to a seperate, standalone NTL cable modem I can access the internet fine (but obviously can't watch TV now).
Is this something to do with the fact that I originally connected to the internet through the cable modem not the STB, thereby locking it to the MAC of the modem or something? If so is there a way to get internet thru the STB working again - I've tried hard resetting it (leaving it off overnight) but still no joy. I've managed to get the MAC address of both the modem and the STB but am reluctant (ie scared) to try spoof the STB with the MAC of the modem (if it's even possible)
At the moment I don't have any registration details etc, cos I just moved into the house and the landlady is away - she basically just left us a load of cables, the STB and a cable modem (dunno why she has both). I doubt whether NTL support will help if I don't have reg details, so I'm trying to sort it myself first.
So, to sum up:
Digital TV - perfect
Internet thru STB - nothing, computer doesn't get IP address, can't ping anything.
Internet thru standalone modem - perfect
Cheers for help

ps I've tried connecting to STB with both normal and Xover CAT5.

Re: Internet thru STB
You can't get BB through both devices.
Quite why she has 2 x devices is a bit of a mystery, but if you don;t mind me saying so-something smells a little fishy.....
 to the site though.

Re: Internet thru STB
Cheers for reply mate . I know I can't get it thru both devices (and tbh, having both does make it look a bit dodgy - but she has a few houses she rents, isn't very tech savvy and maybe just got the cable modem from an old account in another house assuming that it was needed for internet)
I don't want to get it thru both simultaneously though, just the STB. At the moment, I have to switch the coax to the modem if I want internet - not an ideal solution.

Re: Internet thru STB
Did you sign up for the services at that address, or was it the landlady? Do you pay NTL directly, or do you pay her one single amount from which she pays the utility bills?
The way you describe it, I suspect it's the latter, and she has at some point added broadband to the services at the house, but has told NTL that no additional cabling was required. The solution to this is to have NTL come out and properly split the coax so you can use both at the same time. They will probably want paying for this though. You should discuss it with the landlady although in my experience they don't take kindly to being told by their tenants that they need to have work done on their houses!
Incidentally, I don't think NTL will enable your STB for broadband if you already have a SACM, but you never know, they might if you ask, and it would save an engineer visit.

Re: Internet thru STB
Landlady signed up, but as far as I know she signed up for a single package - the internet's been available for a while (apparently) but I only moved in and I'm the only one with a computer. The cost comes out of our rent. Sounds a bit of a mess really, doesn't it?
I don't see why NTL should have to come out and split the coax though - assuming the STB is functional, then I should be able to get internet thru that, I don't care what happens to the modem. At the moment I've managed to get internet thru modem, then wireless router, then 2 floors up to bedroom. But have to switch coax back for TV
Probably best if I get all the info I can off her and talk to NTL myself. As you say though, trying to negotiate/explain something with landlady.....especially something as technically futuristic as the internet

Assuming NTL do offer Broadband via the STB in your area, you will need to contact customer services to get it transferred from the Cable Modem to the STB. Each broadband account can be assigned to one device. That device is either a modem or STB. Either that, or, as discussed above, NTL will need to split the cable.

OK, thanks a lot guys. Was hoping I could do it without having to contact NTL, but I guess not.
