Angry Cancelling NTL

Is it me, or are there others of you out there who have cancelled their Phone, & Dial-Up connection, only to find out that NTL are still taking money out of your account and then insist that you still owe them money?

I was moving house at the beginning of November, and like any sane person would, I cancelled my account via phone in October. I was assured that by the 22nd of Nov my line would be dead. I asked for an address to confirm my cancellation in writing, but they wouldn't give me one, saying that I didn't need to do that. Mistake number one. A surge of insanity suddenly took me over, because I actually believed the person on the other end of the phone was telling the truth. Mistake number two.

I was happy thinking, thank god, I've finally got rid of those jabbering idiots and now I can get back to BT. Mistake number three.

One day I meandered, purely out of curiosity, onto an NTL hell Forum, where shock horror, I saw that people were having trouble cancelling.

By now it was the 13th of December, I'd moved and had not noticed that my line was still active, because guess what, I didn't live there anymore! I then noticed that money was still coming out of my daughters account for Dial up fees and I was still being billed for a house I no longer owned. Pre-warned via the forum, I rang NTL who told me that the line was dead. Okay, Yeah! You see now I didn't believe them anymore because the cult of NTL had lost their grip on me. I was free of them and sane again. Okay, sort of!

Anyway, phone calls ensued, assurances were given, then, when nothing changed and money was still being taken, I began to lose patience with them. Okay, so I accused the man on the other end of the phone of not using a keyboard to input my data or complaints, instead I told him his computer was fictional and that he was drumming his fingers on an upturned bucket to make it sound as though he was working on a computer. It wasn't my fault, they pushed me into because they're so stupid. So, after being assured that my blood pressure was now stabilizing, I contacted Trading Standards.

TS asked for a consent letter to act on my behalf so I obliged. NTL then refused to talk to them about my complaints. Here's another shocker, NTL suddenly and suspiciously no longer had any log records of me ever phoning up to either cancel or complain. Each time prior to that, they read the logs out to me over the phone. Where had they suddenly gone? Humm! I wonder. Is that a delete button I hear clicking?

I phoned NTL Hell up again on the 23rd Dec, and yes, there was always a money making 20 to 30 minute please hold the line you are in a queue speech . Finally a lady answered and told me, to my shock, that she would have to cancel me all over again from January as my line had not be cancelled in October. P***ed wasn't in it. She more or less told me that I had been lied to. She finally got me cancelled on the 22nd January. I've phoned Ofcom, who only log down complaints but do nothing. I've phoned Otel, (tel: 01925 430049) also know as ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution.) who can intervene but only after 3 month's, some good that is right now.

I've sent recorded letters, that went to an address on the back of your bill, which Trading Standards have since told me is wrong and useless. I've been told, via Otel that there is an executive address you can write to. Apparently, this address is not readily known, it will when I put it on the forum I thought. You can't get any higher than this address, so note it down for future reference. NTL CUSTOMER CENSER, PO BOX 232 MANCHESTER, M22 OWL.

To add insult to injury, in November I signed up with another internet service provider. Yes, you've guessed, Virgin.net. Guess who is now back with the cult of NTL Hell. You're right, little old me.

Lessons I've learned, Believe no one when they say, "Thank you for calling, it has now been sorted for you." Buy yourself a voice-recording device to record the garbage they are telling you on the other end of the phone. You'll need the evidence. Only wished I'd thought of that earlier.

Well, I'm still receiving bills to a phone line I cancelled in October and from a house I do not live in. Do you guys think I'm going to pay them? Too right. Come the revolution. The battle lines have been drawn and NTL are going to get their High Noon. I've had enough of the little people being downtrodden and taken for a ride. I only hope that someone out there sees this warning and boxes clever when they finally choose to leave the Cult of NTL Hell.

When I cancel with Virgin.net, and I will, I can assure you I will record the conversation to cover all bases. Self preservation being the main topic here, fight fire with fire is the other.

Re: Cancelling NTL

Whilst I understand your obvious annoyance (God knows I would be just as bad!) what I cant understand is why you didnt go into your back and cancel the Direct Debit if you didnt believe they (NTL) had sorted out the issues?

Re: Cancelling NTL

My daughter signed up to NTL Internet via the phone using her delta/visa card. These can not be cancelled by you or the Bank or Building Society, as it is not classed as either a standing order or Direct Debit. I paid my phone bill by cash, hence they're still insisting that I owe them money. Warning, never use your card to sign up to anything, you can't cancel it.

But you can report your card lost/ stolen- the replacement will have a different card number, therefore the payments will fail when a company try to take them

Re: Cancelling NTL

This is correct, on a daily basis I deal with on behal;f of NTL 100's of payments. All Credit Card and debit card details are help on the computer database. However any agent dealing with these details should have some scrupples and not take a payment with consent, it however does happen in allot of situations. If however you are forced into it via the threat of a downgrade of service be sure to get the card deactivated on the system, that way a payment can not ensue.

Re: Cancelling NTL

Not sure how the law applies to recording telephone messages, if anything you would have to tell them right at the very start of the conversation before anything else.

Re: Cancelling NTL

Thats correct, you would legaly have to be notifed that the call is being recorded, if they dont say then chances are it isn't. NTL Credit Control does not record our calls. Our calls at times are remotley monitored by management for quality control but not recorded.

Smile Re: Cancelling NTL

Hi guys,

Only just found the time to pop back to the forum. My daughter actually went down to her bank, and asked them to cancel her card. She was told that changing it would not help. The bank told her that companies took money from the cards main account number not the card number. As the bank was insisting that this was the case, she decided it would be a waste of time to cancel the card. Again, don't believe everything people tell you.

The Trading Standards people are still trying to help me, but NTL are still insisting that I cancelled on the 23rd of December. You would think that monthly bills with no phone calls made on them, would some how alert them to the fact that I wasn't using the phone line. How stupid can these people get, second thoughts, don't answer that question.

Re: Cancelling NTL

Here's a new one on me,

I've just received a letter from NTL, telling me that they are going to suspend my services because I owe them money. WHAT SERVICES!! I DON'T HAVE ANY SERVICES!! I MOVED ADDRESS AND CANCELLED ON THE 20th OCTOBER 2005.

Not only are they going to suspend my phone connection to my old address, they want to charge me £20 to restore it and say that it will now affect my credit rating. If they want to get nasty, then bring it on, I'm more than capable of sticking with this to the bitter end.

Can anyone tell me what drugs these people are taking, because seriously, we need to tell the police?

I would have laughed if it wasn't so ridiculous.

I can see I am going to be running with this one for a very long time. When NTL advertise for staff, it must read: "Only Idiots need apply."

Re: Cancelling NTL

Ok,

Be sure to keep all this paperwork safe. As this could, as NTL claim, effect your credit score. You need to try and sort this out asap. As it seems NTL are either unwilling or unable (!?!?) to sort out this issue I suggest you make it very clear to them that your not gonna take things lightly.

If you havent already, contact one of the nicer, more usefull members of the NTL 'gang' that visit these boards. They seem to be really good at sorting out problems like this. Failing that...

1. Call up C.S and explain your situation/position. Make a note of who you are speaking to but dont have a big blow up at them, ask to speak to someone who can deal with this issue from management, again take a name, be persistant, dont give in! Try where possible to keep calm and not get angry at the person on the other end, things tend to get sorted much more quickly that way.

2. Visit your local Citizens Advice, its amazing how much clout they actually have in situations like this.

3. As daft as this might sound, try contacting your local MP, ive heard they too can be very good in nasty situations like this.
