Connection drops for everything past router!

I have a little problem which I am absolutely stuck with (a friend is also getting this so I suspect a Windows XP Update!?)

Surfing fine ... Mail etc all working
All of a sudden (no time limit or amount of traffic) I lose connection to outside world
I can still ping my local gateway (router) but nothing outside of this I.e. www.google.co.uk
If I disable and enable my NIC then all is OK again until the next time it goes down.

I have already swapped NIC's from an INTEL to a COMPAQ
I have purchased a new router (before I found the dis/en NIC worked)
I have swapped all patch leads

I am running on 10mb with a 250 modem
I have WinXP Pro SP2 with all updates (originally thought it might by MS05-019 as this indicates some issues - done the workarounds and uninstalled it without joy).
Nothing in EventLog

I've run ethereal and am getting the odd:
[TCP Retransmission] and normally before the connection drops

What can I do to investigate this? - My mate has same problem on a Dell laptop and wireless network (can ping router but no further).

Re: Connection drops for everything past router!

After a little more testing it only appears to happen when one of my MSN contact is active (chat) otherwise OK no matter how much traffic

Re: Connection drops for everything past router!

Are you by any chance using a Linksys router?

If so I had a similar problem interacting with Messenger 7.5 which was fixed by downloading later firmware.

Re: Connection drops for everything past router!

I was until I thought the problem was the router and I went out and got me a Zyxel Prestige 335WT (nice router btw) and I still get the problem

Just installed MSN 7.5.0324 to see if that sorts it out!
