Is there any way of getting out of the initial 12 month contract?

I have been having problems with NTL since it was due to be installed last October. I won't put all the details down here because it would take too long and quite frankly make me too angry.
What I would like to know is if there is any way to get out of the 12 month contract. Has anyone ever been successful in doing so, and if so what was the 'get out clause'.
It has come to the point where we are willing to reinstall Sky and BT again immediately even though we'd still be paying NTL for another 8 months or so.

We don't exclude folks who are not with a cable company you know

Helpful folk here for all sorts of things.
