Recommend Routers!
Look at the page with the routers and I'm very confused! It's saying I can't use a Cable ASDL one? or Something like that. Can someone list the ones in PC World please? And give links? Thanks!
Jack.

Re: Recommend Routers!
You cannot use an ADSL one - you need a Cable one. It should have an RJ45 plug on it NOT an RJ11 plug (a network cable plug like the one on the cable coming from your NTL cable modem, not a phone jack).
You didn't need to start a new thread to ask this question, you could have asked in the one I answered about recommendations.
As said before the Linksys WRT54G would be something I would direct you toward. There is a searc box on the PC world site and if you are in store even the average PC world numpty should know the difference between RJ45 and RJ11.

Re: Recommend Routers!
Yep! But, you said it needed Ethernet? I don't have an ethernet cable to go with the other part of it. Also, Can you use a USB Adaptor (Like anyone) for it?
Jack.

Re: Recommend Routers!
No, you cannot use USB (directly) with any cable router. You would be able use USB adaptors on the PCs if you don't have Ethernet ports on the PCs (although, if possible, I would recommend you get Ethernet cards put in the PCs).

Re: Recommend Routers!
if you have a spare PCI bay in your PC, an ethernet card (Also known as a NIC or network card) can be bought for less than £10.
An ethernet cable would then go from your ethernet card to the router and then the cable modem would plug into the Routers Internet port.
You can not use ADSL routers as it will not work on the NTL network.

Re: Recommend Routers!
There have been a few routers (cable) with a USB port - two friends had the same gigabyte model, and both packed up when out of warranty - haven't seen that model again (fortunately!).
Otherwise, you have to get a USB to Ethernet adapter for a PC, but not recommended unless desperate to avoid fitting a PCI Ethernet card - a far more efficient device.

While I am sure that not all PC World employees fit the description from SMHarman, there are some there that do not know what they are talking about. The guy who told my boss that he should not be using SCSI in his machine as IDE was going to be the only HDD Tech supported in the future for one.

Even more reason not to generalise. There's n00bs everywhere and some people are ****e at their job, some are good.
No need to tar EVERY employee of a large company with the same brush though.

Re: Recommend Routers!
Been through this before here nffc, people just like to moan, same with any company, you hardly ever hear when something went well, which is a majority of the time! Anyway, PC World do suitable routers made by Linksys (WRT54GS), Belkin (F5D7231uk4, F5D7231uk4P, F5D7235uk4 and F5D7230uk4), Netgear (WGR614, WGT624 and WPN824), Some buffalo ones (clearence stock), BT (Voyager 1500) and possible some DLink stuff in some stores (DI604, DI624 and DI634M). Hope that helps.

Re: Recommend Routers!
I'm going to apologise for using the word numpty, sorry, the word employee would have fitted in there just as well and not been derogetory in any way.
That said, if the OP knows that the router he buys needs to have an RJ45 port on it not an RJ11, we are a good way through the battle of making sure he gets out of the store with something that will do the job, not in a position of having to take it back and explain that he has been sold (or bought) the wrong one and he cannot plug the cable from his ISP into the router they sold, and we have been there with some previous visitor who were trying to network their home.
So what your shopping list from PC world should look like is
1) Network Interface Card (NIC) - also know as an Ethernet card
2) Linksys WRT54G or similar wirless router (suitable for attachment to a cable network RJ45 connection not a telephone network ADSL RJ11 connection)
3) A wireless NIC, or a wireless USB connector.
Those three parts, a screwdriver and not a great deal of courage will have you up and running in no time.

Re: Recommend Routers!
Anyone know any good routers in PC World cheap? With a USB Connector thingy?
Jack.

So, If I buy this:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/852034
I would need Ethernet? I only use my internet by USB I'm afraid. The guy had an Ethernet lead in the box but, he took it away with him. There's an ethernet connection on my NTL BB Box.
Jack.

Re: Recommend Routers!
No you wouldn't need ethernet with that set up. To a point.
It has a USB adaptor which is the part that hooks to the PC (via USB), the router connects to the BB feed by the ethernet cable coming out of your SACM or STB. The problem you may have with that combination is that it may not work out of the box and you may need to connect the router physically to the PC to set it up but we can address that problem if it occurs.
