How do i read the status page ... ?

Hi,

Could someone help me to understand what NTL mean on their status page...

Surely they don't mean it's been down for maintainence since 03-JAN
And what does 'Ongoing' mean to ntl ...
to me it means 'its still going on'
I am sure i used ntl over the last week or so, i have emails to
convince myself that i have, yet i cant get on now,
and their page tells me they have had ongoing maintainence since 03-JAN
Or,
it could be that I am not switching on my connection properly.
I have had this problem before,
I've been switching on in this order,
modem - router - PC
no good.
modem (wait 5 mins) - router (wait 5 mins) - PC
still no good
try other PC, still no good.
try without router in line, still no good.
try every combination of PC, router, modem.
try every combination of PC, router, modem again with 5 min wait each.
still no good.
cup of tea.
better.
try again, all of above. including cup of tea.
Connect via dial-up to get here.

Hope someone can help.
Regards, John

Re: How do i read the status page ... ?

Hi John,

On the ntl status page, if you click on each of the items listed, it brings up a details page.
It mentions work for the 4thm 5th & 6th of Jan.

As for why you are unable to connect what lights do you see on your modem once it's booted?

Re: How do i read the status page ... ?

Hi MikeyB,
.
Thanks for replying,
And yes there some places to click on apart from the status history.
One for Broadband, and one for Dial up.
.
Dial up reports that all is ok, there are no problems with dial up.
.
Broadband takes you to the same place you started.
So the assumption is that this would be the page for Broadband info.
.
There are two places to click from here:
one for 'Connection'
and one for 'Broadband Plus'
.
This is where i start to lose track of what is meant by Ntl.
.
I don't know what Broadband plus is. Maybe its broadband with some
extras, maybe interactive television, Maybe anything. I don't know,
but from their info it seems to have been suffering an ongoing service
outage from 14th Dec until now.
This apparently is due to a technical fault, and they apologise for it.
.
Moving on to 'Connection',
which appears to be the term Ntl use for broadband,
This appears to be suffering from a 'Planned Outage' which commenced at
13:00 Hrs on 3rd of January, and is ongoing, with no end time in sight.
.
It is quite possible that i am reading it incorrectly.
It is possible that their status boxes on that page don't mean that at all, but they mean simply that although its all fixed and working,
there are no entries on the resolved part, because thats always left
blank.
And it is possible that the 'End Time' for the outage is not filled in,
because of 'obvious reasons'
.
I have no idea how to read that stuff.
.
.

.
.
Anyway,
The lights on my (silver) modem all look normal, some flickering and
some lit continuously.
I have it on an ethernet connection to an ethernet card at the moment,
but normally it goes to a router for a couple of other machines inc a
laptop. I've tried winipcfg release all, and renew all, but it complains
about DCHP i think ....
i will try that again and post the message properly.
.
I am using dial up to get here at the moment.
.
This problem occurred two days ago.
For some of the time i think its NTL out,
and for some of the time i think its a problem at my end.
.
How can i check which is not working (or both ! )
If its NTL at least i can relax and wait ..
If its me, i can carry on trying things,
as it is i'm just not sure which way to go.
.
Any help gratefully recieved,
John.

Re: How do i read the status page ... ?

The "details" part in the image above tells you what and where....

eg:
Quote:
On the morning of Wednesday 4th January between midnight and 6am, the following work will take place:-

Network upgrades will result in a brief loss of service in Salford, Coventry, Stafford, Bolton, Watford, Camberley and the surrounding areas.
most planned maintenance is done in the early hours of the morning.

All you need to do is look to see if your area is listed, and whether the times for the work coincide with when your problems are occurring.

The "posted" date is exactly what it says- the time and date that the information was put on the website. The planned maintenance is updated every week, hence showing the 3rd jan. On monday it will be replaced with one dated 9th jan with the work that is planned for next week.

WRT your problem- if the sync and rdy lights on your modem are on solid, then it is unlikely (although not impossible) that it is an ntl problem. Have you contacted technical support???

Re: How do i read the status page ... ?

Hi,
.
I did that 'release all - renew all' again,
so that i could get that message again:
.
.

.
.
I got a definition for DHCP from google,
.
Short for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a protocol for
assigning dynamic LP addresses to devices on a network. With dynamic
addressing, a device can have a different IP address every time it
connects to the network. DHCP also supports a mix of static and
dynamic IP addresses.
.
I guess this is some sort of little program to initiate a connection
with the remote server.
I have no reason to suspect it is not working,
as various other machines give the same results.
.
John
.
.
.
Just read last post ....
.
RDY light is on continuously.
SYNC light is on continuously.
U/S light is not on.
ENET light is mostly on, with little flickers at short intervals.
USB light is not on.
.
It just looks normal to me.
I have switched it off then back on.
I have switched it off then waited and switched it back on.
Many times.
.
I dunno what to do next.
I am still using dial up to connect.
I miss my proper connection.
.
Cheers, John

Re: How do i read the status page ... ?

Hi MikeyB, Hi Chris W,
.
I am pleased to say that that my cable connection is back and running.
.
I'm not so pleased to say that when reconnecting the supply lead to my
router, i blew it up.
Well not any actual blowing as such, but i have fused something in it.
I plugged in the hub supply which has the same plug, they were both
hanging about together.
Those little round short plugs like a little cylinder.
My router supply is about 8 volts, positive middle.
My hub supply is about 15 volts, negative middle.
.
So now my router is no more.
.
I pulled it apart, in case i could find anything repairable, but no
i couldn't even follow the circuitwork of the supply wiring/tracework
feeding the various tiny electrolytics.
It looks like its on a multi-layered board, which makes it almost
impossible to follow without a diagram. Probably impossible with a
diagram anyway.
.
So now i have to go and buy another one.
I will have to arrange that the feeds cannot be gotten wrong again.
Probably fixing the units on the wall, or something like that.
.
Well at least my connection is back on.
I dunno what i did different.
Maybe ntl was out, and now its back.
I don't think i did anything that i had not done before,
but i didn't take notes.
.
Well, thank you both for your help anyway.
Having someone else looking at a problem seems to help.
.
Cheers, John
