NIC / Duplex settings

Hi,

I installed a NIC last night (i've been using USB connection to my modem) in readiness for the higher speeds that are on the way It's up and running fine, but i was wondering about the Duplex settings. It's a basic 10/100 D-Link Network card going to the NTL: Home 100 modem. I'm on the 1meg connection (despite being told they had bumped me up to 10Meg, when i asked for it on Saturday).

At the moment both the modem and card are set to auto-detection, as this was the defualt. Would it be beneficial to change these settings? I think i read on an NTL help page to set both to 10 half duplex?? but not really sure why?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,
Will

Re: NIC / Duplex settings

Thanks for the link.

It seems to tell me to set both to Full duplex. So..my next question is 10 or 100? or doesn't it matter? Also would auto-detect not just give me the best configuration anyway?

Sorry for all the questions but full/half Duplex is an area i'm very unfamiliar with.

Thanks,

Re: NIC / Duplex settings

I set mine to 10mb Full, both on the modem and on my network port. I read it in the main 10mb thread, i think.

Re: NIC / Duplex settings

10mbit full duplex is needed to get the full use from a 10mb internet connection. Any lower and you wont get full speeds

100mbit half duplex will also be perfectly fine

Re: NIC / Duplex settings

Just leave to auto - will work at 10mbps when connected to a 10mbps connection, and 100mbps when on a 100mbps connection. As for duplex settings, that should also be automatic. You only ever need to set those manually if you have any problems (which i've never heard of anyone needing to do).

Re: NIC / Duplex settings

I put it to 100mb full duplex... seems to give me the best speeds.

if it defaults to 10mbit half duplex, it will not be enough to max-out your 10mb broadband

If he doesn't get 10mbps it is worth playing with the settings, but I would advise leaving it at the defaults unless there are problems.

Re: NIC / Duplex settings

Seems the ntl 250 has no duplex options and isnt tweakable, I left my lan card on auto negot. It is using 100 but dont know if full or half.

Yes, I noticed that. Still, at 100M it's not going to make any difference to the CM performace whether its full or half.
