Need Help with Wireless Internet Connection from a Laptop

Hi All !

I recently bought an SMC Wireless Router, which works well via the RJ45 connection, but doesn't work via wireless for the Laptop. It is as if Internet Explorer fails to recognise the Connection to the Wireless Router, even if the Connection is Excellent and Secured. I have tried to check the setting on the router, they seem ok !

Can anyone help ?

Re: Need Help with Wireless Internet Connection from a Laptop

Is there an option in the security on the router that only gives registered MAC addresses access, if there is and this is on and you havent entered the MAC address of the laptop into the router you wont get through

I get the same results if the connection is unsecured. The signal strength is full !

The MAC filtering section is disabled.

I can use a nearby connection which isn't mine, so that proves the Wireless Card works in my Laptop.

The Wireless connection has a IP address, which I have pinged and it says it is unreachable. But signal strength is okay and it does say that it's connected to my SMC router.

can you ping the routers IP address from the laptop, or even get onto the admin page of the router from the laptop?

Alas, no, I cannot get the Admin page up from the Laptop or get a satisfactory ping from it either.

I'm sorry if this sounds frustrating, I've been trying to work this out for over a day now. I have even changed the Network key, this appears to work, otherwise the Laptop wouldn't be able to, I suppose visably see the Icons in the Taskbar Tray say Excellent Connection and five bars displayed !

Re: Need Help with Wireless Internet Connection from a Laptop

i dont understand how it can say excellent connection yet you cant ping the router. Are you sure that your trying to connect to your own router?

i would turn the security off until you get connected. The network key would be irrelevant then

Well, I turned off the Data encryption option in SMC Properties / Association from the Laptop and it worked. I do eventually want to have some form of protection, so any data won't be lifted whilst using the Wireless connection. Will the connection be very safe ?

BTW : Thanks for your help so far !

Re: Need Help with Wireless Internet Connection from a Laptop

Sometimes when setting up a wireless router I find it better to do it a cable connection
