NTL Channel reshuffle

Does anybody know if/when NTL are going to reshuffle there channels on the Langley platform (and Bromley). as I recall it mentioned that it was being looked at.

It would be nice to see the +1 channels next to their other channel

Re: NTL Channel reshuffle

well I don't think this will happen anytime soon. As you are able to reorder the channels to your liking through the settings.

Yep you can do that via Favourites, but it is a bit of a pain, and if and when new channels are added, frequently that is not picked up on if you have favourites set. Worst of all, if your STB goes on the blink, you spend the next half hour going back through the favourites.

It would be nice if ntl, transmitted on the same channels, at least that SKy did, at least if you hear a trailer saying channel "xyz" it would make sense, but the aggravation and hassle of resorting, and explaining to everyone what's just happened would be too great.

Re: NTL Channel reshuffle

Now that ntl have completed (I think) the software upgrade to Bromley areas, what's stopping ntl from doing this re-ordering now? Plus, fixing the incorrect names in the epg main guide ie: BBC Choice instead of BBC Three.

As I've said on other threads, it would be irrevelant when/if ntl re-order their channels if you could fully do it yourself. ie: having Hallmark on channel no 6 and in position 6 after channel five. This can be done on Freeview, why not ntl? I find the current favourites system useless. Although you can have the channel where you want, you can't change its number. I sure as hell can't remember that Sky One is 30, while Sky Mix is on 930, LivingTV on 111, while LivingTV +1 on ch 922, etc What a mess.

I'm not a fan of Sky's numbering system. But at least if you want to watch a news channel you know they start on 501, Sport on 401, Docs on 551, Kids on 601, Music on 631 etc. I certainly can't remember each number for all the channels, but I can remember the first number for each genre/category of channels.

Re: NTL Channel reshuffle

I don't think the Bromley 3.2 rollout is complete yet, actually. And even if it was, NTL aren't about to change the numbers any time soon. They will (if they're sensible) wait until the merger with Telewest is finalised, and then look to have one common numbering scheme across all three platforms. While this is incredibly frustrating for NTL people, it is preferable to all the channels being renumbered twice, which is the alternative.

Just to correct one thing above though: as far as I'm aware, the Favourites list on Bromley 3.2 takes the same channel short name as the Mini Guide, i.e. BBC 3 is called than and not BBC Choice.

Re: NTL Channel reshuffle

Sky are introducing a couple of new genres anytime soon which will be followed by channel renumbering quite soon afterwards. Maybe NTL are waiting for them to do this and then renumber everything so that channels are on the same number whether you are watching via Sky or cable.

Re: NTL Channel reshuffle

waiting for SKY (renumbering late November I think) would be logical, and I am sure all stations would prefer to have the same number accross NTL, Telewest & Sky (freeview the exception).

Only problem would be who 'owns' the numbers - i.e. if Sky decided to change their numbers, would NTl have to follow.

Now, if we were talking really 'user friendly' - SKY/NTL would agree to set up some form of commitee, which would regulate the changes, and approve any alterations. That would keep everything fair for both parties, and avoid Sky trying to dictate numbering policy to NTL

Re: NTL Channel reshuffle

Tristan, I'm not talking about favourites. If you press the guide button and go into the tv listings, on my tv anyway the old channel names are displayed. Favourites and the mini guide have the correct channel names displayed.

I agree that it's "a bit of a pain" in much the same way that water is "a bit damp".

Re: NTL Channel reshuffle

It is an active project, and there are people looking into it. However, it's not as easy as some people seem to think it is - don't expect to see the channels renumbered before Christmas.

FWIW, I don't think it would be a good idea to adopt Sky's channel order. There would be big gaps for channels that ntl don't carry, and it seems to prioritise Sky's channels over others'.
