Windows ME system powering it self back up!
I have a Windows ME system to which I added a 3 x USB 2 and 2 x Firewire PCI card plus a USB card reader yesterday. Since doing that the system will not stay powered off after a shutdown. The machine shuts down fine and powers off. About a second later it powers back on again!
I have checked the bios setting and they appear to be the same as before and I've checked the power management settings and they are still configured for a shutdown.
Before I take out the USB/firewire card and restor the system to previous settings, does nay one have any idea's/suggestions I can try?

Unplug your USB devices? Might help you pinpoint if it's the USB causing the problem.

Re: Windows ME system powering it self back up!
you could try running msconfig (click start / run / then type msconfig and hit return)and doing a selective startup (tick the box) and clearing the startup items, then reboot and then try and shutdown.
if it doesn't work try running msconfig and doing: Click Selective Startup then Clear the "Process Win.ini file" check box andClear the "Process System.ini file" check box.
try these things and see what happens! good luck
ps Windows Minging edition!!! why?!?!?!?!?!

Re: Windows ME system powering it self back up!
You could read through this article which has helped many people with shutdown problems. It's a long read but it well worth it

Thanks every one. It was a bios setting called PME Event Wake Up. Out of interest, what is a PME event?

Re: Windows ME system powering it self back up!
PME = Power Management Event. Its used to boot up your PC under certain conditions, like pressing the space bar (if you don't like using the power button on your base unit. At lot of corporations use this, as base units are tucked away, or even in a different room.)
PME Event Wake Up = Wake On LAN, like Zingle said. If it notices any network activity incoming, it'll boot the computer to make you sure you don't miss out.

PME= power management event.
not sure why it is called power management event event in the bios though lol
normally this is associated with the softkeys on the keyboard to make the computer sleep/ wake up etc
