Internet Speed Limit
What if any is the speed limit of the internet?
The reason I ask NTL are uping the service to 10Mb, theres talk of 15Mb service, and I read that Hong Kong is talking about 100Mb and even 1Gb

Re: Internet Speed Limit
The limit is the speed of the 'lowest speed' section in the route you take - this will often be the final connection to the remote server.

Re: Internet Speed Limit
Limit could also be throttling of a servers upload to individual ips, somehow I don't think most servers will allow their connection be raped by a few uber high speed users.

For example, one limiting factor is that the fastest available interface for PCs is the PCIX64 Bus Isolation Extender, which can only handle 7.5Gbps.

This record speed of 6.63Gbps is equivalent to transferring a full-length DVD movie in four seconds.
|
I remember reading another article about Internet2 that said another problem with this kind of speed is that you run out of HDD space far too quickly as you download faster than you can burn it to DVD

The limiting factor is either (and apologies, if this sounds a little rude!) you "sucking" faster than they can "squirt" or the slowest part of the connection between you and where you're downloading from.
There's no point in having a 10Mbit connection if the data can only come through at 512kb!

Re: Internet Speed Limit
Ah, but you can download from multiple places at once and use your 10Mb that way. Really, sitting browsing quietly's about the same on 512k as on 10Mb.
As for the speed limit, I think 40Gbps is used quite widely now for WAN links, and of course you can have several of those together.
