broadband options

Ok folks

24 hrs ago I posted a message concerning the problems I have been experiencing with my NTL Broadband (old problem? - new user)

I can't hang about with this - I mentioned i need access to sites for some study I am doing and I can't do without.

I am convinced the problem is with NTL because:

a) I had BT Broadband previously and I had none of these problems
b) I can view the pages on 2 differant computers (not connected via NTL)
c) The laptop I am using allows me access to these sites when I am at work, but when i am at home - no chance.

I don't want to go into the why's or how's - that for the earlier post.

What I would like to ask is what are the forum members using regarding to alternate suppliers - are there any reccomendations out there? (before I go back to BT)

Appreciate your feedback

Re: broadband options

Have you tried switching proxy to see if that's the problem? What browser are you running?

Re: broadband options

Sometimes you have to switch several times to find a proxy that will work with some sites I just had to try 3 different proxies to get onto slashdot.
Have you tried running firefox? It has a "switch proxy" extension that makes it quick and easy to try different proxys.

I thought you had changed proxy yesterday...

In IE do tools - internet options - connections - lan settings - check "proxy server" and type the following for the address

asfd-cache-1.server.ntli.net
use 8080 for the port. Post back after you tried that.

Edit: some others to try:

belf-cache-3.server.ntli.net
leed-cache-4.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-5.server.ntli.net

Edit again, iirc you also have to uncheck 'automatically detect settings'

No usually, i am a kinda laid back guy...but you my friend deserve a medal...the cheerleaders are for you...scuse me...

Now...

Why does that make a differance? & How do I stop that from happening again (please god no).

Why did I not experience that with previous ISP?

Thank you

Glad it worked I'm sorry I didn't post this yesterday, because I thought you had tried it.

This doesn't happen with your other isp because they don't use proxies.

What has happened is that the proxy server you are automatically assigned has some problem which stops you from conecting to certain pages (and this can be fairly random). Chances are it will be working correctly in a couple of days (so I suggest you check occasionally, and take out the specific proxy you have now put in when it works again).

There is no guaranteed way to prevent this from happening. Now you know how to solve it, you could keep a list of some of the proxy servers handy. Alternatively, there are other, public proxies out there.

But, to be honest, it sounds like the proxy server you were on was particularly bad, so it seems unlikely you will experience problems this bad again.

Edit: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/ is the site I linked to yesterday. (you should now be able to reach that). It explains what proxy servers are, and gives a list for NTL)

Ok - I understand - Thanks again (although now that I can access the study pages I mentioned, I have no excuse for not getting my assignment done on time...hmmm)
