Son and ex mum-in-law hope to wed

I must say I can't see the point of the present law.

All I can say is good luck and best wishes to both of them.

Re: Son and ex mum-in-law hope to wed
IIRC a man can marry his sister in law as there is no direct relationship (unless they were cousins). I suspect it is the age/generation gap which has classed this as a no no, not any other reason. About time it was sorted out.

I suppose it would also be a bit iccy (for want of a better word), if the man has children with both the mother and the daughter. What would the relationship between those children be, could they marry, would that be incest?

They couldn't marry as there is a direct blood link ie via the father.
I think the marriage in question should be questioned on the grounds of this man's possible insanity... did you see the pic of the mother-in-law??!!!!

The thing is if first cousins can marry why not ex-in laws.

Correct me if i'm wrong, they can sleep with each other but not get married, even though they are not related.

The current laws on consanguinity, even though they were, to some extent, revised by the Sexual Offences Act 2003 date back a *long* time.
"The ways that A may be related to B are as parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, uncle, aunt, nephew or niece."
(see http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2003/30042--b.htm#64 if you're interested in the details)
Ok, it can be argued that it's sensible not to allow close relatives to marry because of the possible risk of re-inforcing bad genes, but when there's no blood relationship it's just silly.
