Hi locking out websites
Can someone quickly explain the settings so i can lock out ALL websites except for one or two that we use at work. Someone in the dispatch office is looking at lots of websites instead of working,,,they only need acess to TNT and Parcel force so thats all i want them to have access too. Can i password these settings also, so only i can unlock it!?
Thanks
P

Re: Hi locking out websites
How much budget do you have? As it's only the one person involved, I'm guessing you're looking to do this as cheaply as possible (or free of charge) ...?
You can do this with Microsoft's ISA Server, or with Cisco Security Agent, but both of these are extremely expensive and are massively overkill if you've only got one person abusing their web access. Having a word in their ear would be a cheaper option

Ooh, you mean-spirited git
What's the point of work if you can't abuse the internet

Re: Hi locking out websites
Anyway, I've copied this from the Help text - would this do you at all (bearing in mind there should also be a security tag, which I think you can use for restrictions as well):
To turn on Content Advisor and set limits
In Control Panel, open Internet Options.
On the Content tab, Under Content Advisor, click Enable.
If you've already turned on Content Advisor, click Settings, and then type the supervisor password.
Click a category in the list, and then move the slider to set the limits you want to use.
Repeat this process for each category you want to limit, and then click OK.
If a supervisor password has not already been set up for your computer, you are prompted to create one.
HTH (you old meany )

Re: Hi locking out websites
Thinking about this some more, if your Sys Admin is familiar with Unix or Linux, then you could always use SquidGuard ( http://www.squidguard.org) - which is an ultrafast and free filter, redirector and access controller for Squid

Re: Hi locking out websites
They all seem a bit complex and overkill....its just one person who needs to print despatch notes and track TNT parcels, but they seem to be playing on the net more and more.....I only want them to have access to one/two sites....thought it would be quite easy but obviously not!

Re: Hi locking out websites
How about getting Firefox and IE, and setting the sites they are to use as home page, and making them note that any other pages in history or seen running would result in action being taken, for wasting the companies resources?

Re: Hi locking out websites
Surely your company has a router / firewall??? this can be configured in these, unless they are not business models....... ???? What hardware do you have?

In IE you can disable deleting of the history, but with Firefox you can't AFAIK. They will be able to nuke the history file if they know how to.

Re: Hi locking out websites
...or how about uninstalling IE and only giving him Lynx... he'll find using a text-based browser very boring

Re: Hi locking out websites
Set up an outbound ACL on your router allowing only access to those sites (by IP and Port).
