Could I install a satellite by myself?
Do you think it is possible for me to install a satellite dish by myself?
Given that I have no experience of the like. Is it even safe?
The only problem I can foresee is the actual alignment of the thing, is this possible without any professional instruments? I have a compass if that means anything . The actual dishes are actually quite cheap on ebay and I think I could actually save money. Has anybody actually installed a dish themselves before, how was it? Also - does anybody know if you can receive SES Astra channels using a sky mini dish or do you need one of those eye sore ones?
Replies much appreciated

It depends on the access to your roof - if there is a solid stable surface to stand on, then do it (at your own risk of course). Do not do it from a ladder - would be easier to pay a local sat. fitter to do it. Allignment is fairly easy if you buy a meter (20-30£).

It can be done DIY, but to get digital aligned is rather dodgy without the right equipment, IE sat finder, digi is a lot narrower than the old ano signal.

Well basically our back kitchen is kinda an extension on the house on the ground floor and I think there are secure slates on top of that, I think I could safely stand on that and install a satellite on the house wall from there.

Well thats fine then - what you want to do is Use the signal qual/strength first, then have a flick, making sure the first however many channels work, geting someone to flick between them while you align it if needs be(with mobile phone / walkie talkie). You can find the designations of the different channels on the web somewhere.

Re: Could I install a satellite by myself?
No Probs - had to replace the LNB to fit an extra box, so ended up doing loads of reading!
www.satcure.com then the free ebook about sky digi was quite helpfull. Make sure you get the expensive coax cable too - if your running over long distances, you will experience problems with the cheap TV Arial stuff.

Re: Could I install a satellite by myself?
Heres my top tip... look at exactly where your neibours dishes are pointing, it can be a bloomin nightmare aligning a dish by guesswork, not that easy with analogue meter... but doable... have a search on ebay for promax meters, there analogue and can really help
