Re: Step towards making human lungs

I hope this will happen.
In the last year ive had 2 mates who have died while on the lung transplant list. and I have a mate who is currently on the list.

I know that I will need a lung transplant one day, and if they coul dmake lungs then having to wait years on the list like my mates did will be less of a possibility.

I wonder if they could do this from other cells from your own body that are working ok, so there is even less posibility of rejection of lungs.

I find all the research into the use of stem cells fascinating. I wonder if this application could be used to treat cystic fibrosis, eventually.

Not particularily.Just that CF is one of the main reasons for young people needing lung transplants at the moment. I just wanted to be sure.I too hope that this method proves hopeful for all CF sufferers which is one of the more unpleasant genetic diseases. However the strides in treatment in the last 25 years has seen a higher proportion of sufferers surviving for far longer than they used to.

So good luck to you.I hope with the advent of the present gene research plus breakthroughs like this that CF will be a disease that is easily treatable for all of you.

Re: Step towards making human lungs

That's very true, when i was born my mum was told i had a life expectancy of 12, now im 19 and looking forward to breaking the 31 expectation

Ive heard a lot happening for gene resarch over the last few years. There was somthing in the paper the other day about it. It all looks good, but the trust still need a lot more money, and as they arn't govement funded are finding it hard to scrape cash together for new researchers.

Re: Step towards making human lungs

Reading your post there Incog sounds like your saying this CF causes the problems then I remembered what you mean't

Best of luck finding the threatment DG, I to hope this will happen it is something we could need for the world over and open a new form of medication of which I hope the NHS gets and we don't get buttsmacked for it like the UK tends to enjoy making us do.
