IT outages are reported across the world

Quote:
IT outages are reported across the world, affecting airlines, media, and banks
Many flights have been grounded, with queues and delays at airports
American Airlines says none of its flights are taking off and the IT problems are due to an issue with Crowdstrike cybersecurity software
Microsoft earlier said it was taking mitigation action, but the cause of the outage hasn't been confirmed
In the UK, railway companies report delays and say they're experiencing "widespread IT issues"
Some GP surgeries in England are having issues with booking appointments
Sky News has not been able to broadcast live, its executive chairman says

There have been reports suggesting that a cybersecurity company called Crowdstrike, which produces antivirus software, issued a software update that has gone horribly wrong and is bricking Windows devices - prompting the so-called "blue screen of death" on PCs.
Now, whether these two issues are the same thing, or whether it's a perfect storm of two big things happening simultaneously - I don't yet know. It certainly sounds like it's going to be causing a lot of havoc.
We've contacted Crowdstrike for response but haven't heard back yet.

Update - if anyone is travelling today (by air), probably worth checking the airport website you are flying from - this is a banner on Leeds Bradford

DUE TO ONGOING GLOBAL IT OUTAGES, SOME PAYMENT FACILITIES AND RETAIL OUTLETS WITHIN THE AIRPORT ARE CASH ONLY AT PRESENT. OUR ATM'S WITHIN THE TERMINAL ARE CURRENTLY OUT OF SERVICE. WE ADVISE CUSTOMERS TO BRING CASH WITH YOU TO MAKE PURCHASES IN THE TERMINAL. PLEASE CHECK THE STATUS OF YOUR FLIGHT DIRECTLY WITH YOUR AIRLINE.

Re: IT outages are reported across the world
Sky news came back around 9am.
But they have no banner or clock at the bottom of the screen.

Apparently, cause identified and fix issued.
Someone is going to get their wrists slapped.

Re: IT outages are reported across the world
My doctors surgery last Monday failed to put an urgent script for my dads medication by Thursday.
If they haven't done it my sister will raise hell and report the surgery to the appropriate, who will blame this IT outage.

Trouble is they test these updates on test systems, but the real world is completely different.

Re: IT outages are reported across the world
Coincidentally quite a few financial institutions and others are currently undergoing "planned maintenance" on their websites when you try to log on. Admirable that they're turning a huge outtage into an opportunity to do some housekeeping

Re: IT outages are reported across the world
From what i heard it did not affect personal PC's running windows. I have been using Linux for the last 2 months on my main PC and it only affected me via services that i need to connect to that were on windows machines.

It is de rigueur on this forum to blame the Government for everything. I am hoping to boost my popularity and reputation by getting in first.
