There are hotels that dont offer TV in their rooms. And this could be a beginning of a new trend.

Some owners think that their guests much rather would enjoy the breath-taking views from their bedroom. Others think that rooms without TV promote deep rest.

Many hotels now offer complimentary in-room Wi-Fi (in public spaces) so there is ample opportunity to watch content in the comfort of your room without a TV.

However, observations from hoteliers on guest behaviour suggests content consumption isnt as commonplace as you might expect.

I used to like watching TV in a hotel room when it was a CRT SET.. Now I could care less as I do not like these flatscreen things........

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

Interesting, but I think the article is missing an important aspect. Pay-per-view content used to be a significant revenue stream for hotels (it's what got me into the industry), but now guests bring their own streaming content. Without that revenue, providing television is just a cost to the hotel.

Strangely I don't watch TV at home, but I'll put the TV on in a hotel. But I wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't there.

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

TBH, I've never seen a hotel room without a TV.
What I do always look for now is free WiFi (not for streaming tv though).
The choice of channels in hotels is usually the reason I dont always watch them.

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

If I'm in hotel on my own, hotel tv goes on when I'm getting dressed in morning, but in evening I'm more likely to watch "TV" on laptop, unless there's a sporting event, something live, or I notice a film is on TV I want to watch.

but yes, I remember when hotel rooms had the little cards by the TV with what pay per view films, and "adult" content you could watch, but I guess internet has killed off that revenue as haven't seen that in years.

Also, if you have a tv in the room, you can often hook up your laptop to it, which I prefer.

ppl like my parents who don't have laptops would be annoyed to turn up at hotel and find no tv in room, to them that would like there not being a kettle in the room. I wonder if given the choice they'd be a supplement for TV as optional extra?

I remember as a kids going on holiday, especially abroad it was great putting the tv on and going through the hundreds of channels, back when we had, 3 or 4 (before 5), watching kids tv in USA was brilliant while parents were getting ready, so many cartoons I hadn't seen!

Even now, it's easier to put the tv on to keep them entertained while getting ready etc.

again, i suppose if i could tick a box to say i'd prefer a room with tv, and it was no extra, I'd tick it.

if I was alone, I probably wouldn't bother, assuming the wifi was ok

if it was family, it would depend on cost whethere I added it.

WIFI speed could be an issue, doesn't one of the chains have bog standard free, which is ok for a bit of email, etc, but if you want to stream you "have" to pay for the premium service? I can see them thinking that's the next logical step for them, remove tvs, pay for decent wifi.

A few hotels I stayed in a few years ago had TVs that only offered Pay For View. No terrestrial channels at all.

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

I would want the TV for when I returned from wherever I was that evening. As for content, I’d just bring my Fire stick with me.

Sorted!

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

I wouldn't need a TV, just use my tablet with beeTV app as that gets me everything, WiFi/4G dependant as I rarely never watch a normal TV broadcast.

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

A TV is entirely incidental to whatever reason I’d ever have for being at a hotel. It would always be for a conference or a stopover while traveling and either way I’d not plan to spend long enough in my room to be wanting the TV. So it wouldn’t be a deal breaker in itself, though Premier Inn at least seems to have realised that their guests value a large screen, whether or not it’s actually being used to watch programmes, and in all their rooms refurbished in the last 5 years or so they have a connectivity plate below the TV where you can connect an external source via HDMI, RCA composite and (IIRC) even VGA.

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

I have plex on my laptop so the TV in the room doesn't bother me at all - in fact, I don't think I've ever really tried to use the TV in a hotel room for a while.

i think at this stage I'd probably value being able to use decent quality bluetooth speakers instead of a TV so if I'm listening to music it isn't on the laptop speakers or airpods...

Good Wifi is all i need to access my Plex. I was in Glasgow for a meeting a few weeks ago and i stayed at Motel One. I never turned the TV in the room on once.

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

For me a decent TV with a USB point to plug in a mem stick is good enough for me. And no, if no TV then no go for me as I need it for the background noise. If I'm staying in a hotel then no laptops etc is a rule for me. Usually I'm there for a break from all that. (With the wife obviously).

Re: Would you get a hotel room without TV?

Back in July I was in a Travelodge for one night, I only used it when I got back from a day out and chilling in my room, and again in the morning before Breakfast, and again before checking out.

Not that fussed if there is a TV or not, especially if it is for just one nights stay.
I stream off my phone so can access much more content anyway.
