File to large ???

I am trying to update the sat nav maps in my car. I have to download the file to my PC and then copy it to a usb flash drive to slot into the usb port in my car to update.

I have used the same 32gb flash drive twice in the past two years without any problems.

The file is just under 15GB and my drive is a 32GB capacity.

I am absolutely certain that on the previous times I used this drive I just copied the files across without any problems using FAT32 formatting on the usb drive.

Now every time I try to send the files the drive I get a 'File to large' warning. Following advice I set the format to NTFS and the files transfer perfectly. The only problem is that when I try to install this update in my car the system does not recognise it.

As already stated I am 100% certain I was able to copy the same size of file this time last year and the year before using FAT32.

Any suggestions?

Jim.

Re: File to large ???

This is what I can't understand, I am 100% certain I used this same flash drive with FAT32 on two previous occasions without any problems.

I can transfer it to the usb stick by formatting to NTFS but the software in my car doesn't recognise it.

EDIT. Just noticed on the BMW portal that it now advises using a 64GB fat32 drive.

Re: File to large ???

Are you sure you don't need to extract it? I have a Ford and the software download comes as a big ZIP file that then gets split up into multiple files on extraction which are all smaller than the size limit for FAT32

Re: File to large ???

Certain, this is the 3rd time I have updated the map and it worked perfectly the first two times but it did specify a 32GB USB drive, this time the instructions on the web portal now say a 64GB FAT32 stick is required.

Was it 1 file or many when you did it last. The size of the stick isn't the issue here. You can't put more than a single 4gb file on a FAT32 file system.

Has been said already, if it is a single file then you need to extract it then put it on your stick (or extract the file to your stick).

Look at the file itself, if it's 1 file, then extract it, then check the size of the total files. If it is not 1 file but many and it exceeds 32gb then yes you need a bigger stick.

The trouble is as the title of this thread states... 'File' too large. Meaning 1 file, so extract it first.

There has to be an element of doubt seeing as all evidence put to you tells you it is impossible to have a file bigger than 4GB on a Fat32 file system.

What extension does the file have? as others have said there must be another step to take

---------- Post added at 09:40 ---------- Previous post was at 09:37 ----------

Found a video showing the copy process being done by a BMV update manager and not a simple copy and paste. Is this the case with your car?

---------- Post added at 09:42 ---------- Previous post was at 09:40 ----------

Even the instructions on the BMW site tell you to copy via the map updater app

Re: File to large ???

My car is a 66 reg The update app is for models just after that date. On mine you have to use the BMW Download Manager App, download the file and then transfer to usb, slot into the car usb port and update. I know it doesn't sound logical but I am adamant that this process has worked perfectly on two previous occasions with this exact same usb stick.

The downloaded file is for some strange reason just labelled 'File' ???

As it's a single file, download 7-zip (free), download your file or locate the file, extract it, then add it to the stick.

Re: File to large ???

I haven't got a 64GB stick to try but getting one later.

I know I am not in the first flush o of youth by my marbles are definitely al in place. I did use the same stick and same method of download to hard drive, right click on file and select Send To, the only difference this time is the instruction to use a 64GB FAT32 drive instead of a 32GB drive?

I thought there may be a way to download it directly to a flash drive but the Download Manager App will only allow download direct to your to your PC's main drive.

I had no issues just allowing windows to format a new 64Gb drive however it wanted.
Used BMW download manager to transfer the files, and boom, all done. Worked straight away as soon as I plugged it into the car.
FAT 32 is not compatible as it can't recognize the data >32Gb I believe....
this is from a forum post where it clearly says he used the manager to copy the files

I put it to you that because you had a stick large enough to do it last time the manager copied the data over and not you manually. All evidence points to the manager copying over the data and FAT32 has never been able to deal with file sizes greater than 4GB no matter how much you try to convince yourself and the rest of us differently. Sorry for bluntness

---------- Post added at 11:16 ---------- Previous post was at 11:13 ----------

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1879055

if you read here there is a post that says it says it is a zip which the manager extracts

Try changing the .file to .zip and see if it extracts for you

Quote:
...when you say "copied"; did you do it or the download manager? It's a ZIP which the s/w unzips and copies to your USB drive. There are normally lots of files and several root folders. Download and try copying it again! And as Steve says, FAT32 format is best for map updates (and music)...

Not sure how big the W Europe file should be for your system, but they are at least that. Think my latest one for iDrive 7 system (Europe Live 2021-3) was around 28GB ZIPped.
