I think our local ones took this advice long before being asked to. But still increased prices though.

Re: Offer smaller portions, chip shops urged
Smaller portions aren't the answer. If I am full I just leave the rest. People need to have self control. Same with anything really.
Punishing all of us for the obese peoples problems.

Re: Offer smaller portions, chip shops urged
I'm off to my friend's in Norwich next week and I know we'll have fish and chips on one day but it will be 2 small fish and 1 small chips between us as a "normal" portion of chips is just too large and most would be wasted.

The occasional big portion isn't going to make you obese. It's the continual pigging....

Yup, a bit more education and a little more restraint would be better. We can't run this country punishing the majority because of the minority who regulary over indulge.
Being obese is of course just one possible outcome of eating too much of the wrong stuff but heart disease and Type 2 diabetes would be others and they're not restricted to the obese even it they are more common amongst them.

We can't afford to eat takeaway more than perhaps once a month. And when we consider the huge markup on some meals, we're glad we can't or don't.

Always best to cook your own food. You know what's in it and you only cook what you need. Win-Win

Re: Offer smaller portions, chip shops urged
I'm a geordie, I love Pizza and greasy kebabs. Not obese though despite my profession. Kept good shape and still eat pretty much whatever I please. Basically saying laziness is a factor too. Then again the guy that done my Security training years ago was massive, 300lbs of belly minimum. He had to have been the origins for 'bouncer' The irony of course is that he ran a Physical Intervention, BBJ and military self defence gym... He was the BJJ Instructor too!
He must have been eating 10k a day to be keeping that weight on.

Yup, there's a whole load of tosh talked about how expensive it is to buy and prepare good food but too many people would rather exist on ready meals, fast food, take-ways and the like which cost far more and are often packed full of fat, sugar and salt to boot. It doesn't cost that much to eat well if you shop around, take proper advantage of good offers etc. Cooking bulk meals is also a money saver since it's also usually possible to freeze any excess to provide quick and easy meals on other occasions. It's not rocket science.

Re: Offer smaller portions, chip shops urged
I enjoy both.
Don't really get taco's and stuff up here so there's nothing better than homemade Taco's and Burrito's! Big fan of fish too, not the frozen crap in the box but the ones straight off the counter. When it comes to meats I'm massively in favour of the butcher over the supermarket. Our local one is actually cheaper than places like Asda and I just have a thing with wanting the freshest meat available.
Then of course I love a sloppy Pizza with pepperoni half slapped all over it. You can get sick of takeaways though and actually crave for a home cook, this happens to me all the time when I'm at work and order to sites rather than prep at home. Can't get a nice Pie mash and gravy from a pizza shop.
Anyone tried to make homemade Sushi before? It goes miles better than the £3 pack in the fridges, can also make an exceptionally load more than you get in that pack that'll eventually work out cheaper too.

... and there's no reason not to if you can afford it. Variety is the spice of life and I do love a hot pepperoni pizza myself. Mmmmm....

Re: Offer smaller portions, chip shops urged
I think people at 'risk' need to find that balance of both. As my own experience above, I got sick and in the end just made it simple for myself in rotating between taking meals to work and ordering something. I know and have met people that actually live on takeaways. These same people are the type of people that have actually convinced themselves anything from the Chinese could be considered healthy and a battered cod from the chippy is fish and thus good, despite the batter and the fact it's been deep fried.
The logic that Big Mac = Unhealthy so Lettuce + Big Mac = much better.
All in all however, it's free will. Doesn't affect me, it's their own choice to make.

Re: Offer smaller portions, chip shops urged
I haven't been able to eat standard takeaway portions for the last few years i get full and stop usually just under halfway through the amount and whilst i don't agree with all portion sizes being cut I'd appreciate being able to choose from smaller portion sizes. It really is time we grew out of the nannying tendency whereby the whole must suffer because of one part. Whilst I'm very aware there are a number of medical conditions that can cause people to be overweight and obese there are a group of people who are too lazy to do it themself and would over indulge whatever food.
There's a woman up the road who constantly complains about her weight and the problems it cause's but has those four packs of dairy cakes in her basket everyday and a guy a couple of doors up from her who only seems to eat the really cheap and nasty sausages and frozen chips, although he has an alcohol issue and i think buys just two types of cheap food to free up the max amount for his vodka. Instead of calling for a blanket reduction in portion size have more portion size options a far more adult way to deal with things and having smaller portion sizes would remove the excuses some use.

Re: Offer smaller portions, chip shops urged
I did read that the MacDonalds salad has more calories in it than a Big Mac, if you add the dressing.
Butto be honest we go to resteraunts that give good value for money.
