All VMNG300 modems disconnected without any warning

Well after more than 30 years of being a customer of ntlworld/virginmedia today they cut off my internet connection without warning .

The reason being according to Virginmedia that the certificate for my trusty VMNG300 modem had run out and it was not going to be renewed.

The only alternative was to use a new super hub router/modem which uses 3 time the electric power than my modem with no advantage to me. Virginmedia are unable to supply modem only kit and the only option open to me is to use the new Super Hub in modem mode using more unnecessary power.

The girl on the Virginmedia telephone said "we have had a lot of calls today from people who use those modems and they have all been disconnected"

So goodbye Virginmedia its time to find pastures new.

You want to change ISP because of something that costs less than 1p a day ?

This is on the service page

We know of 1 issue in your area

Customers with Ambit Modems on the 20mg service might find that they do not have any Virgin Broadband, services at the moment.

Our engineer is working to fix the problem.

Re: All VMNG300 modems disconnected without any warning

Al I know is I was informed by Virginmedia that my modems certificate had run out and it was not going to be renewed its as simple and as clear as that.

My only other choice was to use the new Super Hub which they would send for free but uses more electrical power or leave I chose to leave.

Apparently according to the same woman from Virginmedia they had had a lot of calls today about the modems being disconnected. Being connected to the Internet is not the end of the world for me at my age.

I'm still trying to get my head around the fact you say you dont care that much about the internet, but you would rather go through all the hassle of changing provider for the sake of what probably amounts to 20p per month of extra electricity (on top of which, the new providers hub/modem may use as much or more power anyway). Perhaps I am missing something here.

If you have been a customer for 30 years then surely this not the first time you've had to change modem.Simply upgrade to superhub 3, I reckon its better in my opinion. More downstream and upstream channels and can also be used in modem mode which probs has less energy consumption. You probably have a separrate wireless router, unless you dont have a smartphone, laptop or any other wireless divice, If you do, then that has about the same or more energy consumption as any superhub?? Simply upgrade to the new superhub. I'd ave done ages ago

Re: All VMNG300 modems disconnected without any warning

Where did you get info that the Superhub 2 or 3 uses 3x the power to that of the ambit??

I certainly doubt that is the case.

Re: All VMNG300 modems disconnected without any warning

What isp are you going to move to that provides a modem?

---------- Post added at 13:44 ---------- Previous post was at 13:43 ----------

You probably used more electricity writing this post than the amount of energy difference between the modem and she in modem mode

It probably would. Most ISPs seem to provide a combined router/modem as far as I know.
