Manslaughter - nut death restaurateur
Quote:
A restaurant owner has been found guilty of killing a customer who died from an allergic reaction to a curry.
Paul Wilson, 38, suffered a severe anaphylactic shock in January 2014 after eating a takeaway containing nuts from the Indian Garden in Easingwold, North Yorkshire.
A jury found Mohammed Zaman, 52, of Huntington, guilty of manslaughter after a trial at Teesside Crown Court.
The court heard he cut corners by using cheaper ingredients containing peanuts.
Zaman denied he was responsible but a jury was told he switched almond powder for a cheaper groundnut mix, which contained peanuts.

I don't have a lot of sympathy given that he apparently ignored several warnings about the risk to customers.
As the parent of a child with a nut allergy who's had a serious reaction, this sort of thing make me shudder and I can't imagine why anyone with such an allergy would take a chance by ordering food from anywhere where nuts are routinely used. One mistake by staff and it could be curtains...

I've been following this story and they should throw the book at this bloke ,the only motivation to cut corners was pure greed

6 yrs in jail ,no where near enough in my opinion especially given the prior warnings he was given and chose to ignore

Re: Manslaughter - nut death restaurateur
To be honest I wouldn't have been surprised if it'd been less. Although it sends out a tough message, I reckon an appeal will follow and the sentence be reduced significantly.

Reduced Significantly ??? he's only going to be serving about 3 yrs ,i would have thought at least 10-12
Maybe i'm a bit of a tyrant but that is in no way a tough message imo

Yes, serving 50% of the sentence is common but I'd wager he won't wind up serving 3 years and it is a travesty when it happens in cases of manslaughter but it seems to a lot and IMHO that's what'll happen.
Sadly what you and I would call a tough message sadly isn't what the courts deem to be one.

It's more than some but then when our prisons are full what should we expect - more costly prisons or reduced punishments?...

If a prison sentence were what it should be - a deterrant then it would be different, unfortunately it's not.
Holiday camp comes to mind.

Re: Manslaughter - nut death restaurateur
I have NO SYMPATHY whatsoever over this man going to prison. Having worked for Kitchen Hygiene for many years.
I have seen loads of stuff, that Restaurants do to save money. This problem is only the tip of the iceberg, as far as l am concerned.
Pure greed in the restaurant chains, fast food restaurants etc etc. These places don't want to pay out money.
I have seen so much that l would make a fortune, if l wrote a book about what l have seen.
They guy deserves a long sentence.
He could be in the prison kitchens tomorrows.
