Lib Dems to lose another MP?

in a first some live court proceedings are being broadcast in a case that could see the last surviving lib dem MP in Scotland having his election result voided.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...tland-34154193

Quote:
A legal challenge over the election of Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael as Orkney and Shetland MP is being heard in Edinburgh.
Four of Mr Carmichael's constituents have raised the case.
They say he misled the electorate over a memo which claimed SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon wanted David Cameron to be re-elected prime minister.
Worrying times for MPs if they are being held to account for lying

But he didn't lie. The memo was genuine. The writer of the memo might have been mistaken, but that is not the issue.

Re: Lib Dems to lose another MP?

The issue isn't whether he lied about the memo, the issue is whether the things he said and did during that affair, affected the election campaign in Orkney to such an extent as to amount to deception of the electorate, requiring the contest to be re-run.

IMO it's an utterly spurious and vexatious case that should have been chucked out before it got anywhere near the courts, but so much of officialdom is scared of being piled on by hordes of nippy nats at the moment, I think the authorities had a collective failure of moral backbone and just let it through for an easy life.

My prediction is that the case won't succeed and we will then have to endure the tedious whining of the nats, about official bias to the establishment, etc etc etc.

Yep. The country seems to be going through the type of mass delusion and detachment from reality that North Korea would be proud of. Everything bad is the fault of they big bad tories and Westminster and anything good is due to holyrood.

Trying to point out the declines in pretty much most devolved areas is met with 'Aye but once we get independence it'll all get better'

Re: Lib Dems to lose another MP?

I detect a good deal of what I believe is SNP inspired and orchestrated anti Tory propaganda dressed up as genuine public opinion. I've always listened to a lot of phone-ins and it's surprising how many Scottish callers seem fixated on dragging the Tories into just about any subject. That never used to be the case. It's the same in London when the airwaves are suddenly full of supposed 'members of the public' whose comments and phraseology seem alarmingly similar to that used by such folks as the union representatives who're trying to justify their latest strike. Before anyone interjects to the contrary, I'm not saying that they're ALL disingenuous but I do believe that a good deal of it is orchestrated by those who wish to make a point and are trying to a) smear their opponents and b) create the impression of more public support than there actually is.

By the way folks, that's just a personal opinion and I don't expect a flood of new CF members to suddenly appear here to support it before disappearing back into the ether from whence they came, never to be heard of again...
