Cold Calling

Sick to the back teeth of this. If it isn't a recorded message about PPI it's someone calling from a market research company.

Had one five minutes ago trying to tell me about a window scrappage scheme so he just got hung up on without me saying a word...which is now the standard reply.

I went onto the TPS website and put my number into that months ago, which is supposed to stop it, but they keep on ringing.

Will any of the following work on Virgin phone lines

Just tell them next time they call, that you are registered with the TPS, take your number out of their systems and to stop calling you.

With those call blockers you risk blocking people who are genuinely trying to call you. i,e friends or family that withhold their numbers or companies that use withheld or prefixes of certain area codes.

A lot of the calls i get are recorded messages.

For call blockers, you just need to have caller id.

The CPR is a preset blacklist, Truecall can do blacklist/whitelist and "challenge", where the caller will be asked to identify themselves, and then the phone rings and delivers that identification message, when you can then whitelist, blacklist, pass once or reject once. Another challenge style is "press the right key".

Truecall built into a dual cordless set at that price is pretty good!

Around our way, we tend to get more cold calling done in person. I lose track of the amount of people offering me windows, doors, drives, solar panels, 'did you know its law now to have x mm of wall insulation - I notice you don't have any' etc etc.

I worked out the very best tactic for this a while ago. I open the door, look at them and mutter 'cannnsaull' in my best east enders accent. They leave immediately.

Yes. I have the built in version on a BT8500 phone.

Should not be a problem but you would probably hear the first ring on it which truecall silences on the phone.

Just remember if you sign up for TPS all of the larger call centre businesses will stop calling you, smaller business will still do the olde.. get you from a phonebook or 192 DVD, but you can ask them for the company name... and then tell them not to call again and to remove you from their "system". That way if they call again to you, then they are liable for a big hefty fee (think it's £5k).

But it won't stop Overseas calls, they will still happen.

And since most calls from India etc use Skype to call you, I am surprised VM hasn't offered a small fee to block Skype calls, since the calls are from the usual sources and are easy to detect. (Hence when you get called from Indians there is that small time of nothing happening before you hear something).

I hate people like that, and they are mostly cowboys... trying to scare you into business with them, especially when they get the older people on their own they are very pushy.

Years back at my gran's who was getting frail, answered the door to a roofer, and he was practically trying to get into the house physically... "Let me show you... and we can have a cup of tea with it".. then I peeked around the door into the landing... and he spotted me and made excuses and was nearly off.

I caught him before going and asked him for his ID etc, stopped him from driving off while gran phoned the Police to come around, because he was trying to get access to the house without authority, and he was well not pleased.. did the revving thing like he was going to run me down, didn't move. Thankfully others from neighbouring houses came out and stood there also.

Never knew what happened to him, as in dealing with police when they took him there, if he went to court etc.. no idea.

Well i decided to take the plunge and get one of the BT8500 Advanced call blocker phones. The call announce part works fine but it is nor recognizing any numbers in my phone book, meaning every call needs to go through the call announce. Which makes it a bit inconvenient relay.

I'm with Virgin so I'm guessing i'm needing caller ID which i believe Virgin charge £2.75.

So there could be a brand new 3 hand set BT8500 Advanced call blocker phone up for grabs shortly.

Gryphon, it's worth giving CS a call, I was given caller ID free some time ago and my daughter phoned up and said her Dad got it free and she got it for free. I also got it for my sister for free. They can only say no!

If they don't stop after registering with the TPS and asking them to stop, report them to the Information Commissioner https://ico.org.uk/concerns/marketing/

Helps if you have the times of the calls and numbers; do mention you feel 'harrassed' as then they have to take action. Worked for me with one company. The ICO's powers are going to increase to make it easier prosecute companies, long overdue.

If the caller has with held their number and it is a recorded message (which i seem to be getting a lot of) there's not a great deal to report.
