Twitch streaming query

Ok google has given me different answers so kinda hoping someone knows a definitive yes or no here.

Obviously virgin throttles upload speeds during peak as per their TMP http://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-ma...hresholds.html

However even on 150mb connection i only get 7mb upload speed, which would mean if i streamed for 2 hours, that would easily be knocked down to the 65% slower which would make it basically pointless to think about streaming with Virgin.

On the other hand i've seen a post or 2 that mentions twitch isn't effected by this and it shouldn't be in issue.

So question is, Is twitch exempt from getting hit during peak times or am i best moving to BT for their zero throttling?

Re: Twitch streaming query

It applies to all traffic, so twitch will certainly be affected.

Infinity is a much better proposition if a reliable upload is important.

Re: Twitch streaming query

Well I think its 4 Mbps for source quality on Twitch @1080p, so even after the 65% reduction on 152mbit you might just get away with it. Best way is to trial your streaming quality and test.

Re: Twitch streaming query

I tried streaming and when using OBS, I had mine set to the max that Twitch will allow and the stream was stuttering like crazy.

Streaming from Geforce Experience or the built in Twitch App on the Xbox One suffered the same issue with stuttering video but the audio was ok.

The traffic management on Virgin just makes it not worthwhile touching if you want to stream during the day time, so you would be best looking at a ISP that can not only give you a faster upload speed such as BT Infinity or a ISP that can give a more stable upload connection without punishing you for using it for none illegal means.

You've glanced over this. You should be getting 12Mbit upload, if you're only seeing 7Mbit then there's an issue somewhere.

As for STM, it will be 65% of your full speed, so you should still get about 4Mbit even under STM. I don't know what twitch requires to stream, but sort your connection out first.

Sounds like that 7Mbps is already STM'd. Nonetheless it's rather irrelevant, STM operates on what the tariff should be getting not what he actually is getting.

STM will thus be 65% of 12Mbps nomatter what his "full speed" is. If he only gets 7Mbps normally he will still get 7Mbps under STM, not 4Mbps (Unless somehow his tariff is 7Mbps to begin with).

Re: Twitch streaming query

yeah bit odd, checked my pc next to the router, it's 11mbit upload

my pc in the room next door is 7mbit, practically only a wall between the pc's. I am using cat5e cables though so hopefully that will be fixed tomorrow when i finally upgrade to cat6.

not a clue otherwise as we both go through the same router.

Re: Twitch streaming query

Cat 6 is pointless and will make no difference whatsoever. Unless you're also only getting 7Mbps download, in which case you have a fault somewhere.

80 mbps (which is terrible seeing i'm on 150) cables needed replacing anyway so 2 birds 1 stone seeing virgin insist there is nothing wrong with my connection, and hasn't been for the past 5 years.

Re: Twitch streaming query

Well if your PC next to the router gets full speed, then Virgin is right - the connection is fine.

However, only getting 80Mbps on Cat5? On a relatively short run? That doesn't sound right. Our office is Cat5e and everyone gets 1Gbit, some of the runs are near the 100M threshold as well.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say your cabling isn't the problem, not unless you have serious crosstalk somewhere.

Things get stranger

did a network check and my lan speed is apparently 100mbps. however my network card is a ONBOARD 10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT. So is 100mbps my max? and if so why does it have 1000 in it?

Re: Twitch streaming query

Sounds like a dodgy card or cable or misconfiguration. It shouldn't be 100Mbps.

It may well be the cable, crosstalk can cause that. Speaking of our office again, we had all the ports/cables tested and one was showing as out of spec. It actually works fine, but only syncs at 100Mbit.

You're going a relatively short distance, but does your cable have many sharp bends in it? Is it near or going over power lines, maybe? Either way, a quick test would be to take a router of some kind and a short ethernet cable, then plug that into your PC. You don't need internet access to see if it syncs higher than 100Mbit.

Re: Twitch streaming query

Update time, i found the issue, Updated my router last year ready for going up to 100mb. So got a router capable of 120mbs, i didn't however check on the Ethernet speed for said router, with was only up too 100 mbps. Got a new router today, i'm not only getting 1.0gbps via my network, but getting 120mbs d/l - 12mbs u/l on a saturday peak.

Fingers crossed that should be enough to stream even after throttling as you guys said, thanks for the help everyone though
