Police and technology- Never a good mix
Apparently pressing a wrong key can wipe out several weeks worth of data...
Quote:
Police Scotland has admitted it lost 20,000 stop and search records because "someone pressed the wrong button".
Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Mawson told MSPs on the Scottish Parliament's justice sub committee that a total of 20,086 stop and search records had been lost because a "computer programmer pressed the wrong button between May and July last year".

I just laughed when I heard this. You could see it as a plot line in a police series but in RL? Bonkers.

I'm guessing some-one f-ed up, didn't own up/admit to their mistake right away, so recent backups weren't restored, when they found out the tapes which would have held the data had been overwritten as part of the backup cycle

If I had to guess I'd say the story is utter bull excreta. Luckily I don't have to guess so I won't.

Agreed, when I saw it yesterday I thought it most likely they deleted the data to avoid having to report it.
