ntlworld email set up in Gmail
Need some help here please guys. Had a GMail update on my tablet this morning and it now allows you to set up any other mail accounts.I tried adding my ntlword.com address but it won't connect to the server. I've tried jiggling the details, but still no good. These are the details required.
Incoming server settings
IMAP/POP?
email address ( which I have)
username ok
password ok
server which already has ntlworld.com there
Security type, choices STARTTLS, SSS/TLS
PORT (110 is already entered)
Sorry to sound a bit dense, but I've tried all combinations.
Thanks

Re: ntlworld email set up in Gmail
What I do is have GMail pull email from my other accounts into GMail. You can plop them in separate folders if you want but that way you don't need to set email clients to login to various different servers.
If you do want to let your client handle it you still really only need one outgoing SMTP entry no matter how many incoming you have. And I prefer IMAP to POP but that's just my choice.
One other thing is that when I was setting up clients I did have to go into the WebMail to allow POP/IMAP connections.

Re: ntlworld email set up in Gmail
Now and then smtp.ntlworld.com has had issues over authentication but you can also use smtp.virginmedia.com as the outgoing server with the same identity.

You should change your pop server as it's not a supported configuration - should be pop3.ntlworld.com

Thanks, tried all those but still can't connect to server. Guess I'll just stick to what I've got. Thanks for helping.

Re: ntlworld email set up in Gmail
Are you trying over wi-fi?
It used to be the case where ntl/blueyonder emails wouldn't work on other providers. I don't know whether that changed with the move to GMail apps.

Recieving e-mail should always be possible on any connection. Where the problems kicks in is sending: Most smtp servers will only accept connections from within their corporate networks as a precaution against spammers.
So long as the connection by whatever means is provided by VM the ntl.com / virgin.net / virginmedia.com smtp servers will accept the outgoing mail. The alternative here is to use the webmail access.
FYI Vodafone's mobile network is in VMs domain so smtp on VM servers works fine on 2G and 3G piggybacking. I've also been able to send mail from "The Cloud" wifi hotspots.

Re: ntlworld email set up in Gmail
All Virgin's SMTP servers should work from any connection, that doesn't in itself block SMTP, as long as you use authentication

That must be since using the secure authentication. It certainly didn't used to work on port 25. Thanks for the info.

Yes, the tablet is only wi-fi.

Re: ntlworld email set up in Gmail
I can't get this to work either works fine in the stock app but the Gmail one just tells me it can't connect.
Edit got it to work:
Incoming:
imap.virginmedia.com
SSL
993
Outgoing:
smtp.virginmeida.com
SSL
465
Although it only has a option to poll every 15 minutes and not as mail comes in. But at least I can now remove the account form the stock app.

Re: ntlworld email set up in Gmail
Once you add the incoming it will ask for outgoing, have you tried the settings above worked for me last night? I have a ntlworld account and the virginmedia server worked.
