Minor, but irritating recording problem

I'm getting used to the upgrade from V+HD to TIVO, but find minor problems - maybe there is some way round these?

We're sometimes not home in time for early evening news, so have set BBC 'News at Six' and 'Reporting Scotland' to record. V+ would also record Saturday and Sunday early evening news although they were not titled News at Six. TIVO doesn't record weekend editions.

Reporting Scotland is more of a nuisance. V+ would only record the early evening edition, but TIVO records every broadcast ie lunchtime, early evening and late evening. I have to go into 'Planned Recordings' regularly to clear these to leave recording space free in case there is a recording conflict.

I don't see any way of setting to record only one daily edition.

I've also found the remote control difficult. It seems to be a law to itself whether it moves, or whether it makes several moves at once. I've found that it works more easily if I stretch out my arm towards the TV - possibly it has a shorter range than the V+.

Everything else is good.

Re: Minor, but irritating recording problem

Maybe you have the recording options set to record 'New' and 'Repeat'. So it would be worth checking what effect choosing 'New only' had. Any alteration you make will then be reflected in you Planned Recordings.

As for your remote signal I had to maneuver our Tivo so that I had clear sight of the magic eye bit. I had put a plant near the Tivo and moving that, along with moving the unit further towards the front of the shelf, solved my problem of the remote signal being a tad hit and miss.

Re: Minor, but irritating recording problem

For the News, set series links for weekend editions too.

You could solve the Reporting Scotland problem by setting a repeating manual recording at the time you want it to record. (Home->My Shows & Recordings->Manual Recording)

The remote problem may be what Jo says. Or maybe the TiVo is picking up IR interference from the TV screen. In this case, pushing the TiVo back a bit so it can't "see" the TV may help.

Re: Minor, but irritating recording problem

I have turned off "series" recording for the same reason you need to. Tivo will record not only the "episode" you want, but every repeat it finds. In my case I found the drive filling up with episodes old and new, SD and HD, from multiple channels.

I now just set manually by flipping through the guide.

I have turned off "suggestions" too, as for some odd reason it kept thinking that I wanted to watch "America's Next Top Model" even though I had given it 3 thumbs down!

I also have poor remote operation so will have to move the Tivo a few inches to the left.

You don't need to turn off suggestions, it doesn't have any impact on the space you need for recordings. Your own recordings will always take priority.

Re: Minor, but irritating recording problem

Maybe, but trying to find the programme I want to watch amongst a list of "suggestions" in my recorded list is a pain...

You don't have to even open the Suggestions folder if you don't want to! Switching off suggestions is a bit pointless really and if you are stuck for something to watch, it is a last resort which may surprise you with a programme you want to see.

Re: Minor, but irritating recording problem

Thanks for info.

I'll have to experiment with moving the TIVO and my chair.

As for the series problems. I thought I had set a manual recording series for the early evening Reporting Scotland, but still got every edition, but I'll double check that. I tried setting a series link for the weekend news, but as it's just called BBC News, it recorded every edition, but again I'll check that I've set a manual recording.

I've sussed out the new/repeat recording of other programmes and have been able to further sort by actor eg getting only the new Midsommer Murders, so this is working well.

I much prefer the V+ method for displaying recorded and planned programmes as it is much easier to spot the programme you are looking for and you could scroll down the list easier a page at a time.

The next chapter button ( ->I just above and to the right of slow) will also take you straight to the end of the list then pressing it again goes back to the top.

Re: Minor, but irritating recording problem

I've found the remote to be a bit sensitive to old batteries - did you use brand new ones tart came with it, or take the old ones out of your previous remote?
