Samsung UE42F5000 and Tivo picture quality.

Hi,

I've just brought a new TV which was delivered today. I bought a Samsung UE42F5000 (http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/UE42F5000AKXXU) to replace a Samsung LE37R88BD. I did a quick hook up this afternoon but the picture quality hasn't really impressed me that much.

I went to the Tivo's video output settings and have 720p,1080i and 1080p (pass through) ticked. From ready other forum posts no UK provider broadcasts in 1080p only 1080i.

I' was having a look through the various settings but I have no clue what all of them mean. I was wondering if its the HDMI cable. The HDMI cable is astandard one that was giving to me when VM installed my Tivo.

Any help or tips on advised settigns greatly appreciated.

Hi there

1080p pass through is for netflix only so just have 1080i selected unless you use netflix. Switch there picture mode movie and turn the sharpness setting to zero also turn of all the picture enhancements off like noise reduction mpeg filter cinema black motion flow etc

The HDMI cable won't be the issue, quality is identical no matter which you use. It's more likely that the factory settings the TV came with are the problem, unless that's what you meant by "pick hook up".

Go here for calibration discs or files http://www.avsforum.com/t/948496/avs...p4-calibration and also scroll down the page for links to guides.

Good point about the HDMI cable issue. I just read http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/11...v-quality.html and see that it shouldn't really make a difference.

It might be the factory settings as wrong. I had a look through that last link you sent and it completely gone over my head. To me it should liek a calibration tool for HD/Blu-ray DVD players.

Thanks KnightRider. I've made sharpness 0, noise reduction and mpeg filter and only have 1080i set on the tivo box.

My picture setting:
Picture mode : natural
Backlight: 12 (max 20)
contrast: 74
Brightness: 50
Sharpness: 0
Colour: 52
tint: G50/R50

Advanced Settings is greyed out and that has black tone and flesh tone etc.
Picture looks quiet a lot better.

If you standard picture mode like mine select that and will have access on the advanced settings.

The settings you have are low contrast, mine is 100 contrast normally it makes the picture and colours super sharp.

It's safe to also enable 1080p. At the moment, it is only used for Netflix.

AV forum has some pretty good trouble shooting for this TV's settings. I now have a really good picture on my 55 inch LED tv... TiVo and Netflix work really well on pass-through.
