An Indian rocket has blasted off on the country's first mission to Mars as it aims to become the only Asian nation to reach the Red Planet.

The rocket carrying the unmanned probe took off at 9.08am GMT from the Sriharikota spaceport, close to Chennai.

It entered orbit around Earth 44 minutes later, the country's space agency confirmed.

The gold-coloured probe, which weighs 1,350kg (2,976lb), is about the size of a small car and is being carried by a 350-tonne rocket - much smaller than the US or Russian equivalents.

according to a 'bod' (sorry I can't remember the name) on SkyNews earlier, this venture will bring in more money for India so for them to invest the same amount into health care would have been pointless.. apparently. Also India spent a lot less on this venture than the western countries due to not having countless multi million pound meetings over crap, basically get on with it.

India hopes to find evidence of methane when it reaches the planet.

The existence of the gas would lend weight to the idea of Mars being able to support life

Meanwhile, in news from 12 months ago:

The UK is to end financial aid to India by 2015, international development secretary Justine Greening has said.
Support worth about £200m ($319m) will be phased out between now and 2015 and the UK's focus will then shift to offering technical assistance.
Ms Greening said the move, which will be popular with Tory MPs, reflected India's economic progress and status.

I assume at least some of those who will welcome this (old) news, will at least accept that in withdrawing aid, the UK has to give sufficient notice to those organisations, and Indian government departments, that may already have planned and budgeted for it, and that 2015 is a reasonable deadline for that.

Also, from the same article:

India spends £70bn on its social welfare budget, compared with £2.2bn on defence and £780m on space exploration.

So it's not as if they're sitting back and letting us handle their entire welfare and development bill for them.

The Coalition took the correct decision last year.

Now we need to stop aid to another country that can afford a weapons program it does not need. Pakistan springs to mind !

The UK government has announced plans to end aid to India by 2015, but at the same time the amount of money going to its neighbour Pakistan is set to soar from £267 million now to £446 million in 2014/15, making it the biggest recipient of foreign aid.

At least they have good well funded nuclear weapons
