At what cost

http://news.sky.com/story/1163186/sp...ol-run-parking

Its just a another side of getting money from the public.

Where l work, there are FIVE schools calling for this to happen. They have asked for camera's for the past FIVE years. There have been many problems outside these schools.

The local council have refused to put them in due to costs. Traffic WILL NOT patrol the area due to parents having a go at them. I have asked their supervisors and have been told that they don't patrol the area.

Still the council won't install them as they cannot afford it.

Re: At what cost

School-run Mums ignore yellow lines, zig-zags and many warning notices around here. They even fill the pavements and block access to homes and a doctors surgery.

Re: At what cost

I was told by the council that people are allowed to park on pavements and driveways for 10 minutes without any problem.

On Zig Zag is an instant ticket, BUT there are no wardens there to give tickets out for it.

And the best one l have heard from a warden is 'there must be a warning sign for drivers outside school in place to give a ticket out' the Council WON'T install them due to cost.

I have tried and tried to understand your post Arthur, first you start by saying "it's just another side of getting money from the public"
I read that as they "council" want to or do raise money from parking infringements, so your having a moan about the motorist being hammered again.
Then you keep saying that councils don't have the money for wardens or cameras to be able to issue fines. Which is it? I'm confused, really, really confused!

Anyway my 2 penneth worth.
I would (if it were my council) have somebody pass out copies of the highway code with the relevant infringement highlighted and also take down the reg number of the offending vehicle. If caught again then issue a ticket through the post to the registered keeper of the car.
At least by handing out copies of the highway code your are giving them the chance to relearn what they may have forgot regardless of how obvious some of the signs and instructions are.
Where would the money for this come from, I would see it as a self perpetuating no profit exercise that would employ 1 or 2 people as it's self funding.

Re: At what cost

How about another way of looking at it? Could the parents WALK the kids to school? Quite apart from the problems with illegal parking, we have an increasing problem with obesity in kids. Would it hurt to have them walk a little?

I live near several schools. One is only about 3-400 metres from my house, yet certain of my neighbours used to drive their kids to that school. And we live in a safe area, so there is little chance the kids are in danger (beyond the danger inherent in crossing the road).

Re: At what cost

I heard someone on the radio today claiming that all these people (mum's mainly) who do the school run have drive because they're so busy with jobs to do or busy households to run. Apart from those I know who live locally and drive nonetheless, it's odd how I see so many of these 'busy' mums standing around chatting for ages before and/or after they've dropped off and collected their children...

Given that the catchment area for our local primary school is effectively about 3/4 of a mile, I find it hard to believe that any but a small proportion of those who do use the car for the school run actually need to do so.

Frankly I think a good deal of this is down to pure laziness on the part of parents....
